Video Game Development

The Video Games industry is a fast growing, multi-billion dollar industry. Austin is one of the leaders in the country. Video games require unique design, programming, art and production skills. This course is intended for programmers who want to enter the field of game design and development, but who do not have training in game programming techniques including 2D and 3D graphics, sound, and animation needed to complete a game programming project. Topics covered in the course include: object oriented design of games, discrete event simulation and state machines, managing game time, game GUI implementation, and introduction to 2D and 3D graphics, sound programming, and game design. Prerequisites: Video game programming, C/C++ programming experience or consent of instructor.

The course is designed for those interested in managing their own game products, or those in established companies who have a need to better understand the business issues in game products. The course will cover the basics of business management. Topics include: How to start it: incorporation, sole proprietorship, sub chapter S corporation, versus a normal corporation; How to do it: market analysis and marketing/sales, managing development, manage a budget, what costs don't you expect, tax implications, cost estimation, subcontracting work; How to protect it: negotiation, contracts, and intellectual property. Subject matter experts will give lectures.

This course will explore methods for and strengthen skills for establishing a look and feel for an entire game. Students will choose a game concept, and then design and draw characters, environments, architecture, static objects, UI, and storyboards for that game. There will be a strong focus on applying 2D design concepts, such as design elements and spatial relationships. The final project will be a complete, fully illustrated pitch document for a game. Prerequisites: Design and life drawing courses or instructor's consent.

GAME 2059 Capstone: Video Games (42.0 hours/$459.00)
This is the final course in the ACC Video Game Development Certificate Program. Students will be assigned to a 4-person team to develop a video game, mod or reel that will serve to demonstrate their capabilities. Each team will have a representative from each of the disciplines - Programming, Art, Design and Production. The class will run the length of the semester. Each team will have an industry mentor. The team will define the project, design the game, schedule the work required, and test and deliver the game on the committed schedule. There will be periodic milestone reviews with industry professionals. These milestone meetings will serve as go/no-go checkpoints for the team project. The output of the project will be the property of the students. There will be no classroom meetings, only one-on-one with mentor and project evaluators. This project will run the length of the semester. Prerequisites: Completion of all other requirements for an ACC Video Game Development Certificate in one of the four specialization disciplines. Also addresses development for personal computers versus console or wireless. Integrated with college credit GAME 2370.
