Dental Assisting Program

The courses listed in this section are part of the Dental Assisting Certificate Program.
This program includes the following courses, and must be taken in order of listing:

Semester I:
DNTA 1011 Dental Science
DNTA 1073 Emergency Management

Semester II:
DNTA 1075 Chairside Assisting
DNTA 1005 Dental Radiology
DNTA 1060 Clinical - Dental Assistant

Semester III:
DNTA 1052 Office Management & Procedures
DNTA 1064 Practicum Dental Assistant

Completion of this program prepares the student for entry-level practice as a chairside Dental Assistant in a dental practice, and includes preparation for the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners certification in radiology; and healthcare provider CPR training. Registration for any of these courses requires admission to the Dental Assisting Program. For more information, admission requirements, and/or to request a program brochure, please call 512.223.7090. DNTA 1005 Dental Radiology I (64.0 hours/$465.00/$50.00 Lab/$13.50 Insurance)
The history of radiology theory will be presented including physics, radiation protection, operation of radiographic equipment, darkroom procedures, and exposure techniques. The student will state the theory and principles of radiographic techniques, physics, and radiation health and safety; and exhibit competency in exposing, processing, and mounting intraoral radiographs. Only current students of the Dental Assisting Program can register for this course.

DNTA 1060 Clinical-Dental Assistant (48.0 hours/$301.00/$50.00 Lab/$13.50 Insurance)
Basic non-paid work-based instruction that helps students synthesize new knowledge, apply previous knowledge, or gain experience managing the workflow. Practical experience is simultaneously related to theory. Close and/or direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional (instructor), generally in a clinical setting. Current admission to the Dental Assisting Program is required for registration.

DNTA 1075 Introduction to Chairside Assisting (51.0 hours/$256.00/$50.00 Lab/$3.50 Insurance)
An introduction to chairside assisting procedures, instrumentation, infection control, equipment safety and maintenance. The student will identify appropriate armamentarium for designated dental skills; demonstrate infection control procedures for a dental office setting; and demonstrate competencies in specific chairside assisting techniques. Current admission to the Dental Assisting Program, required for registration.
