Clinical Acute Care Skills

The following courses are offered in a modular format providing acute care skills training to entry level (CNA, PCT, CA) and other health care providers (RN, LVN, EMT). Individuals may take individual courses or all courses as needed to enhance skills in the acute care or other health care setting. For further information call the coordinator at 512.223.7090. ECRD 1011 Electrocardiography: Introduction (16.0 hours/$61.00)
Fundamentals of the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, dynamics of cardiac function as it relates to mechanics and electrical elements of the heartbeat rate and rhythm. 12-lead EKG is used to identify lethal and dangerous life threatening dysrhythmias. Includes role of caregiver in reporting and participating in "code" situations. Designed for the unlicensed employee in a clinic or general nursing unit. Prerequisites: If the student has no previous EKG reading experience, it is strongly recommended that this course be taken before the Telemetry and Monitoring course (NUPC 1077).

NUPC 1077 Telemetry and Monitoring (16.0 hours/$61.00)
Designed specifically for the patient care technician or nurse assigned to monitor the telemetry unit. Includes a foundational understanding of the heart, the implications of decreased cardiac output, interpretation of electrical activity with an emphasis on recognition of common and potentially "lethal" dysrhythmias. (16 hours CNE/TDH). For students with no previous EKG reading experience, it is strongly recommended that they take Electrocardiography-Introduction (ECRD 1011) prior to taking Telemetry and Monitoring.

NUPC 1078 Basic Phlebotomy Skills (16.0 hours/$59.00/$5.00 Lab/$13.50 Insurance)
Skills in the safe collection, labeling and handling of blood specimens obtained from the adult, adolescent and infant by the Patient Care Technician for the purpose of clinical laboratory analysis. Includes aseptic collection methods for skin puncture, vacutainer and butterfly. CNE-meets requirements for 16 contact hours for nurses who have received no prior training in phlebotomy.
