Medical Coding Specialist Certificate

Certificate program. All classes are integrated with college credit courses - students may enroll under either option. Students must successfully pass the reading and writing sections of the Compass test in order to enroll in the Medical Coding Program. College Credit students should call the Program Director at 223.5928 and Continuing Education students should call 223.7055 for counseling and assistance.

HITT 1041 Coding and Classification Systems: Coding I (64.0 hours/$450.00/$50.00 Lab)
Application of basic coding rules, principles, guidelines, and conventions. Health Information Coding Specialist apply ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 codes used in the reporting and billing of medical services and procedures. Most specialists will be employed in hospitals, but job growth will be faster in offices and clinics of physicians, nursing homes and home health agencies. Integrated with college credit HITT 1441. Prerequisites: (or Corequisites) HITT 1005/1305-Medical Terminology; MDCA 1009/1409-Anatomy and Physiology for Medical Assistants or BIOL 2401-Anatomy and Physiology I. A basic understanding of the computer keyboard and medical terminology for all body systems as well as knowledge of anatomy and physiology is strongly recommended.

Development of advanced coding techniques with emphasis on case studies, health records, and federal regulations regarding perspective payment systems and methods of reimbursement. Lab introduces student to hands-on experience with encoding and internet training software. Integrated with college credit HITT 2435. Practical general training and experiences in the workplace. The college with the employer develops and documents an individualized plan for the student.
