MLAB 1101 Introduction to Clinical Laboratory Science
An introduction to clinical laboratory science, including quality control, laboratory math, safety, laboratory equipment, laboratory settings, accreditation, certification, professionalism, and ethics.
PLAB 1166 Practicum (or Field Experience) -- Phlebotomy/Phlebotomist
Practical, general workplace training supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student. A health practicum may be a paid or unpaid learning experience.
PLAB 1323 Phlebotomy
Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, accessioning, professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. Prerequisite: Admission to program.
MLAB 1331 Parasitology/Mycology
A study of the taxonomy, morphology, and pathogenesis of human parasites and fungi, including the practical application of laboratory procedures, quality control, quality assurance, and safety.
MLAB 2263 Clinical-Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technician: Molecular Diagnostics Clinical
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Prerequisite: MLAB 2378 and MLAB 2479.
MLAB 2362 Clinical - Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technician III
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Prerequisite: MLAB 1315, MLAB 1227 and MLAB 2401.
MLAB 2378 Fundamentals of Molecular Diagnostics for Clinical Laboratory Sciences
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of clinical molecular diagnostics and explores the use of molecular techniques in the diagnosis of disease. Topics to be covered include: nucleic acid structure and function, genetics, DNA chemistry, introduction to nucleic acid isolation, identification and amplification techniques used in infectious disease diagnosis in the clinical laboratory, components of a molecular laboratory, and evaluation of controls to validate results obtained. Prerequisite: Graduation from an accredited MLT/CLT or MT/CLS program.
MLAB 2434 Clinical Microbiology
Instruction in the theory, practical application, and pathogenesis of clinical microbiology, including collection, quality control, quality assurance, safety, setup, identification, susceptibility testing, and reporting results. Prerequisite: Admission to MLT Program or department approval.
MLAB 2479 Molecular Diagnostics Techniques
An introduction to the theory and laboratory techniques in molecular biology with an emphasis on molecular diagnostics, including DNA replication, transcription, gene expression and regulation, recombinant DNA and RNA techniques. Topics include hybridization techniques and amplification techniques such as QPCR. Prerequisite: MLAB 2378.
