ENGLISH FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES - ACADEMIC
Academic ESOL offers English classes for speakers of other languages in three skill areas: writing and grammar, reading and vocabulary, oral communication. Within each area, we offer classes at five levels: introduction, high beginning, low intermediate, high intermediate and advanced. Students wanting to enroll in ESOL classes must take the ESOL assessment test. For information about the assessment test, call 223-9202 or 223-9236. ESOL 0330 ESOL ASL/English Reading Comprehension for Students Who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing
This course is designed for Deaf Students and taught in American Sign Language. Students develop comprehension skills in both American Sign Language (ASL) and written English. Emphasis is on comprehension skills such as identifying the main idea and supporting details as well as developing the ability to analyze inferences and figurative language through active translation between the languages. Features fiction and nonfiction ASL works as well as written English texts. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit.
ESOL 0331 High Beginning Reading and Vocabulary for Students Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
This course is designed for Deaf Students and taught in American Sign Language. Emphasis on comprehension skills, such as identifying main idea, supporting details, and patterns of paragraph development. Features reading short passages of academic materials. Focus on high frequency vocabulary and word forms. Repeatable for up to six-credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: Placement is made based on ESOL assessment.
ESOL 0340 Introduction to Oral Communication
Designed for ESOL students at the introductory level, this course emphasizes speaking and listening to everyday American English. There is a strong focus on understanding simple conversations, generating conversations about simple topics, and using correct pronunciation, including vowel and consonant sounds as well as stress and intonation. Repeatable for up to six hours of credit.
This course is not for college-level credit.
Prerequisite: Placement in the class by the ESOL Oral Assessment.
ESOL 0341 High Beginning Oral Communication
Designed for high beginning ESL students. Course emphasizes speaking and listening to everyday American English. Strong focus on understanding English speaker conversation and using correct pronunciation, including vowel and consonant sounds as well as stress and intonation. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: ESOL 0340 with a grade of C or better. Placement in the course by the ESOL Oral Assessment.
ESOL 0342 Low Intermediate Oral Communication
Designed for low intermediate ESL students. Course emphasizes speaking and listening to American English. Development of better listening skills by listening to real-life conversations and short academic talks. Practice in speaking in pairs and groups. Continued focus on correct pronunciation with the goal of helping reduce accents that interfere with communication. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0341 or placement in the course by the ESOL Oral Assessment.
ESOL 0343 High Intermediate Oral Communication
Designed for high intermediate ESL students. Course emphasizes speaking and listening to formal American English. Development of academic listening and note-taking skills. Exposure to long talks and short college lectures. Practice in giving short presentations and leading group discussions. Continued practice in using correct pronunciation to reduce accent interference. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0342 or placement in the course by the ESOL Oral Assessment.
ESOL 0344 Advanced Oral Communication
Designed for advanced ESOL students. This exit-level course prepares students for participation in discussions and presentation of oral reports in the college classroom and the workplace. Emphasizes listening to formal American English. Continued practice in academic listening and note-taking skills. Exposure to real-life formal talks and college lectures. Class activities include explaining and defending one's opinion in group discussions and giving formal presentations in class. Further work on pronunciation problems and development of vocal variety including intonation, emphasis, and pitch. Repeatable for up to six-credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0343 or placement in the course by the ESOL Oral Assessment.
ESOL 0351 American English Pronunciation: Advanced
This course practices the ways in which spoken English differs from written with emphasis on the strategies English speakers use to make their message very clear for listeners. Time is spent learning how difficult English sounds are produced, and how native speakers produce the characteristic rhythm and intonation patterns of the language. Repeatable to 6 hours credit.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: Students need to have been placed in ESOL 0384.
ESOL 0360 Introduction to English Reading and Vocabulary
This is an introductory-level course designed to improve reading proficiency in English and develop an appreciation for reading. It is the first in a series of five courses whose purpose is to prepare students to handle the reading assignments they will encounter in college and in the workplace and teach language through reading and vocabulary. Emphasis on word attack skills, phonics, and syllabication. In addition students will be introduced to topics, main ideas and supporting sentences. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit.
Prerequisite: Placement in the class by the ESOL Reading Assessment.
ESOL 0361 High Beginning Reading and Vocabulary
Designed for high beginning ESL students. Emphasis on comprehension skills, such as identifying main idea, supporting details, and patterns of paragraph development. Features reading short passages of academic materials. Focus on high frequency vocabulary and word forms. Repeatable for up to six-credit hours.

ESOL 0362 Low Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary
Designed for low intermediate ESL students. Continued emphasis on building comprehension skills. Introduction to analytical components of reading. Continues emphasis on development of vocabulary through analysis of word structure. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course isnot for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0361 or placement in course by ESOL Assessment.
ESOL 0363 High Intermediate Reading and Vocabulary
Designed for high intermediate ESL students. Emphasis on more complex analytical reading skills for reading college textbooks and novels. Introduction to annotation. Advanced study of vocabulary using context. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0362 or placement in the course by ESOL Assessment.
ESOL 0364 Advanced Reading and Vocabulary Skills
Designed for advanced ESL students. This exit-level course prepares students for reading in college courses and the workplace. Emphasis on critical and analytical reading skills and advanced reading strategies for reading college-level textbooks, novels, and periodicals. Continued expansion and application of vocabulary. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade C or better in ESOL 0363 or placement in the course by the ESOL Assessment.
ESOL 0380 Introduction to English Writing and Grammar
This entry-level course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of English. Writing topics include prewriting strategies, how to construct correct sentences, how to structure a paragraph and how to write a descriptive and a narrative paragraph. Grammar points covered include the simple past, present and future verb tenses, the present progressive, parts of speech, formation of negative sentences and questions, pronouns, an introduction to articles,count & non-count nouns, and basic high frequency adverbs.Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit.
Prerequisite: ESOL Assessment Test.
ESOL 0381 High Beginning Writing and Grammar
Designed for high beginning ESOL students. Course emphasizes using standard English grammar in writing paragraphs. Writing topics include brainstorming, writing paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting, sentences, and concluding sentences, how to write compound and complex sentences, how to write a descriptive or narrative paragraph and a reason paragraph, exposure to and practice with different modes of writing. Grammar points include a study of the simple and progressive present and past tenses, the future tense, and modal auxiliaries. Other points include nouns, pronouns, articles, comparatives and superlatives, coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: ESOL 0380 with a grade of C or better or placement in the course by the ESOL Assessment.
ESOL 0382 Low Intermediate Writing and Grammar
Designed for low intermediate ESL students. Course emphasizes using standard English grammar in writing longer paragraphs and short essays, practice with outlining and brainstorming, exposure to and practice with different modes of writing such as reason/argument, process, description. Grammar topics include study of perfect tenses, comparisons, modals, and an introduction to clauses. There is a continued emphasis on writing compound sentences and an introduction to complex sentence structures with appropriate conjunctions, transitional expressions and punctuation. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0381 or placement in the course by the ESOL Assessment.
ESOL 0383 High Intermediate Writing and Grammar
Designed for high intermediate ESOL students. Writing topics include further practice in formal essay writing with a focus on classification, comparison/contrast, and process analysis essays as well as an introduction to paraphrasing and summarizing. Grammar topics included continued study of the perfect tenses, introduction to the future progressive, future perfect and future perfect progressive tenses, passive voice, modal auxiliaries and further study of clauses and articles. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0382 or placement in the course by the ESOL Assessment.
ESOL 0384 Advanced Writing and Grammar
Designed for advanced ESOL students. This exit-level course prepares students for English 1301, other college writing, and writing in the workplace. Writing topics include more formal essays in the modes of narration, comparison-contrast, cause-effect and argumentation with a focus on documentation. Grammar topics include a review of verb tenses, articles, modals, clauses including reduced forms, and passive forms as well as the introduction of gerunds and infinitives and conditional sentences. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: A grade of C or better in ESOL 0383 or placement in the course by the ESOL Assessment.
ESOL 0392 Business Communications for Non-Native Speakers
Business Communications for Non-Native Speakers is a communications course for non-native speakers of English. The course occurs in a simulated office setting in which students become fellow employees of a small business specializing in consulting. Using a "hands-on" approach, students work through various business procedures, such as conducting meetings and taking minutes, creating press releases, writing white papers, and showcasing new products. This course presents business grammar and vocabulary to non-native speakers and requires students to apply this knowledge to reading, writing, and speaking the language of business English. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit. Prerequisite: ESOL Assessment at the level of high intermediate or above in writing/grammar and reading/vocabulary or a grade of "C" or higher in ESOL 0382, ESOL 0383, ESOL 0384, ESOL 0362, ESOL 0363, or ESOL 0364 or permission of the ESOL department.
