EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES PROFESSIONS

ALL COURSES REQUIRE DEPARTMENTAL APPROVAL PRIOR TO REGISTRATION. Certain vaccinations and a criminal background check through ACC’s vendor are required for admission to the program. Prospective EMT students must attend an online Information Session in order to gain access to the application for that program. Prospective Intermediate through Paramedic students must also complete an online Information Session in order to apply for entry into the program. Optimal application deadline for Fall 2010 seating of the Intermediate course is June 1, 2010, or until all seats are taken for the fall semester.

EMSP 1261 Clinical - Emergency Medical Technology/Technician--Paramedic Clinical I To be eligible for registration students must complete the following: (1) pass a competency test based on the Williamson County EMS Clinical Operating Guidelines, the exam will be available July 1-8, 2010. (2) Present an AHA Healthcare Provider CPR card, (3) proof of current EMS certification and (4) verification of Tb status (PPD). Items 2 though 4 must be valid through the end of the clinical semester in order for a student to register. Verification of eligibility is through the Clinical Coordinator. Additionally, all students registered in EMSP 1261 must attend MANDATORY clinical orientation and skills verification sessions on August 27 and Sept. 3, 2010.

EMSP 1147 Pediatric Advanced Life Support
A course in a system of protocols for management of the pediatric patient experiencing difficulties in medical and/or trauma related emergencies. Prerequisite: EMSP 2330.

EMSP 1160 Clinical-Emergency Medical Technology/Technician-Basic Clinical
A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care, generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Clinical experiences are unpaid external learning experiences. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Corequisite: EMSP 1501. Rideout Fee: $46.60

EMSP 1261 Clinical - Emergency Medical Technology/Technician--Paramedic Clinical I
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Prerequisite: EMSP 1338, EMSP 1356, and BIOL 2404.

EMSP 1338 Introduction to Advanced Practice
An exploration of the foundations necessary for mastery of the advanced topics of clinical practice out of the hospital. Prerequisite: BIOL 2404 (or can be taken concurrently). Current Texas EMT Basic certification or eligible to test for National Registry at EMT Basic level.

EMSP 1355 Trauma Management
A detailed study of the knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of patients with traumatic injuries. Prerequisite: EMSP 1338, EMSP 1356, and BIOL 2404.

EMSP 1356 Patient Assessment and Airway Management
A detailed study of the knowledge and skills required to reach competence in performing patient assessment and airway management. Prerequisite: BIOL 2404 (or can be taken concurrently). Current Texas EMT Basic certification or eligible to test for National Registry at EMT Basic level.

EMSP 1501 EMT -- Basic
Introduction to the level of Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)--Basic. Includes all the skills necessary to provide emergency medical care at a basic life support level with an ambulance service or other specialized services. Corequisites: EMSP 1160.

EMSP 2135 Advanced Cardiac Life Support
Skill development for professional personnel practicing in critical care units, emergency departments, and paramedic ambulances. Establishes a system of protocols for management of the patient experiencing cardiac difficulties. Prerequisite: EMSP 2444.

EMSP 2137 Emergency Procedures I
Instruction in a laboratory environment concentrating on development of practical medical skills and critical thinking abilities. Students will master a variety of skills appropriate to their training level by a combination of practice; use of mannequins, actors or other students, and stage scenarios. Required verifications of specific skills may be included. Prerequisite: EMSP 1338, EMSP 1356, and BIOL 2404.

EMSP 2237 Emergency Procedures II
Instruction in a laboratory environment concentrating on development of practical medical skills and critical thinking abilities. Students will master a variety of skills appropriate to their training level by a combination of practice: use mannequins, actors or other students, and stage scenarios. Required verifications of specific skills may be included. Prerequisite: EMSP 2434, EMSP 2330 and EMSP 2260.

EMSP 2243 Assessment Based Management
Comprehensive, assessment-based patient care management. Includes specific care when dealing with pediatric, adult, geriatric, and special needs patients. The capstone course of the EMSP program. Designed to provide for teaching and evaluating comprehensive, assessment-based patient care management. Prerequisite: EMSP 2434, EMSP 2330, and EMSP 2260.

EMSP 2260 Clinical-Emergency Medical EMT Paramedic-Paramedic Clinical III
A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Offered in fall semester. Rideout fee: $232.65 Prerequisite: EMSP 2444.

EMSP 2266 Practicum (or Field Experience) - Emergency Medical Technology/Technician (EMT Paramedic)
Practical, general workplace training supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student. Rideout Fee: $216. Prerequisite: EMSP 2434, EMSP 2330, EMSP 2260.

EMSP 2330 Special Populations
A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence in the assessment and management of ill or injured patients in nontraditional populations. Prerequisite: EMSP 1355, EMSP 1261, and EMSP 2444.

EMSP 2434 Medical Emergencies
A detailed study of the knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of patients with medical emergencies. Prerequisite: EMSP 2444.

EMSP 2444 Cardiology
A detailed study of the knowledge and skills necessary to reach competence in the assessment and management of patients with cardiac emergencies. Prerequisite: BIOL 2404, HPRS 2300, EMSP 1355, and HPRS 1206.
