Participation in a small commercial music ensemble concentrating on commercial music performance styles. The class will focus on rock and blues performance styles. May be repeated for credit.

Introduction to basic aural, visual, and vocal experiences in dictation and singing at sight with emphasis on identification of chord progression, motion, and melody/harmony relationship of popular music. Prerequisite: MUSI 1301 or Department Approval. Corequisites: MUSC 1313.

MUSC 1303 History of Popular Music
A study of commercial music industry trends and developments through historical analysis. Topics include the evolution of the music industry with emphasis on the development of popular musical styles and the impact of culture and technology on industry growth.

MUSB 1305 Survey of the Music Business
An overview of the music industry including songwriting, live performance, the record industry, music merchandising, contracts and licenses, and career opportunities. Discussion regarding Music Business on the Internet will be included.

MUSC 1313 Commercial Music Theory I
Introduction to chord progressions, song forms, and harmonic techniques used in commercial music. Topics include modern chord notation and chord voicings. Prerequisite: MUSC 1301 or Department Approval. Corequisites: MUSC 1211.

MUSC 1321 Songwriting
Introduction to the techniques of writing marketable songs including the writing of lyrics and melodies, setting lyrics to music, developing lyrical and musical "hooks," analyzing the marketplace, and developing a production plan for a song demo.

MUSC 1327 Audio Engineering I
An overview of the modern recording studio and related personnel. Topics include basic studio electronics and acoustic principles, wave form analysis, microphone concepts and miking techniques, studio set up and signal flow, recording console theory, signal processing concepts, multitrack recorder principles and operation, and an overview of mixing and editing.

MUSC 1331 Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) I
An overview of Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) systems and applications. Topics include the history and evolution of MIDI, hardware requirements, computer numbering systems, channels and modes, the MIDI language, and typical implementation of MIDI applications in the studio environment using software-based sequencing programs.

MUSC 1333 Synthesis I
A study of sound synthesis including sound considerations, electronic sound sources, basic signal processing, and voltage control and modulation. Topics include additive, subtractive, and AM and FM synthesis types. The student will also receive an introductory overview of digital audio sampling and sample processing.

MUSC 1371 Introduction to Modular Synthesis
This course examines introductory concepts of modular synthesis and visual programming (i.e.: Reaktor, Max/MSP). Students will learn how to use various software to build custom instruments (subtractive synths, sequencers, and basic audio effects), as well as receive an introduction to object-oriented programming using the open source language ChucK. Additional concepts include granular synthesis, sampling, and basic signal processing, as well as an introduction into generative and probability-based electronic composition. Prerequisite: MUSC-1333 or Instructor Approval.

MUSC 1391 Special Topics in Music, General
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Audio for Digital Media - This lecture and lab based course will prepare students for the basics of manipulating audio content for use in motion graphics and other types of digital media. Students will learn industry-standard techniques in generating and gathering audio elements, altering them to match the project style, mix them and output them to appropriate formats while maintaining synchronization to the visual elements.

MUSC 1405 Live Sound I
An overview of the field of live sound. Includes principles of live sound and the theory and interconnection of the components of a sound reinforcement system. Site Fee: $50. Prerequisite: MUSC 1327.

MUSB 2305 Music Publishing
A study of the administrative and marketing aspects of music publishing including the application of current copyright law, developing songwriters, rights exploration, and royalty collection.

MUSB 2309 The Record Industry
A study of the history of the record industry and the organization of large and small record companies. Topics include record company functions such as artist and repertoire, promotion, marketing, business affairs, and administration and distribution.

MUSB 2345 Live Music and Talent Management
An examination of the role, scope, and activities of the talent manager including establishing the artist/manager relationship; planning the artist's career; and developing goals, strategies, and tactics with an overall view of the live music business.

MUSC 2345 Synthesis II
A continuation of Synthesis I including hybrid synthesis and digital sampling. Prerequisite: MUSC 1333.

MUSB 2355 Legal Aspects of the Entertainment Industry
Copyright law and the various agreements used in the entertainment industry. Emphasizes contracts used by music publishers, record companies, artist managers, record producers, film and television producers, and booking agencies.

MUSC 2355 Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) II
Advanced study of and skill development in music notation software at a professional level, including large score notation. The class will also study sequencing technology, hybrid sequencing and audio/MIDI techniques. Prerequisite: MUSC 1331.

MUSB 2386 Internship -- Music Management and Merchandising
An experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the educational institution and a business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to specific occupational outcomes. This may be a paid or unpaid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Prerequisite: Department Approval.

MUSC 2427 Audio Engineering II
A continuation of Audio Engineering I with emphasis on implementation of the techniques and theories of the recording process. Topics include applications of microphones, the audio console, the multitrack recorder, and signal processing devices in recording session environments. Prerequisite: MUSC 1327 or Department Approval.

MUSC 2447 Audio Engineering III
Presentation of advanced procedures and techniques utilized in recording and manipulating audio information. Topics include advanced computer-based console automation, hard disk based digital audio editing, nonlinear digital multitrack recording, and advanced engineering project completions. Prerequisite: MUSC 1327 and MUSC 2427 or Department Approval.

MUSC 2448 Audio Engineering IV
Examination of the role of the producer including recording, mixing, arranging, analyzing projects, session planning, communication, budgeting, business aspects, technical considerations, and music markets. Site Fee: $50. Prerequisite: MUSC 1327, MUSC 2427, and MUSC 2447 or Department Approval.

MUSB 2450 Commercial Music Project
The primary objective of this course is to apply the skills learned in other Commercial Music courses. This is a hands-on, project oriented course aimed at helping students create a portfolio of their work. Artists and their music will be the focus. Each student must design and complete his/her own project with instructor approval. May be repeated for credit with different emphasis. Prerequisite: Nine hours of courses from the Commercial Music Department.
