CDEC 1166 Practicum (or Field Experience) - Child Care Provider/Assistant I
A specialized workplace experience designed to strengthen students' job skills by providing an opportunity to use acquired skills and techniques with young children. An individualized learning plan will be developed by the placement site, college and student. Ten hours per week of regularly scheduled lab experience is required; five hours of this must be completed at the ACC Lab School. Students who have taken 15-25 hours of CDEC must enroll in this course before completing additional CDEC hours. Offered in Spring. Prerequisite: DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test and completion of 15-25 hours of CDEC courses and departmental approval. Student must be eligible for field experiences by passing a criminal background check through the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services and meet the Child Development Department’s field experiences/lab policies. Corequisites: CDEC 1392 and DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test.

CDEC 1303 Families, School, and Community
A study of the relationship among the child, family, community and schools, including parent education and involvement, family and community lifestyles, child abuse, and current family life issues. This course is for Child Development majors. Offered in Fall. 16 hours of field experiences required. Prerequisite: DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Student must be eligible for field experiences by passing a criminal background check through the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services and meet the Child Development Department’s field experiences/lab policies. Corequisites: DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test.

TECA 1303 Families, School and Community

An introduction to the education of the child, birth through age 12, including developmentally appropriate practices and programs, theoretical and historical perspectives, ethical and professional responsibilities, and current issues. Focus on local and national standards and legal implications of relevant policies and regulations. This course is for Child Development majors. 16 hours of required field experiences. CDEC 1321 The Infant and Toddler
A study of appropriate infant and toddler programs (birth to age 3), including an overview of development, quality routines, appropriate environments, materials and activities, and teaching/guidance techniques. Regularly scheduled field experiences required. Prerequisite: DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. CDEC 1354 Child Growth and Development
A study of the physical, emotional, social and cognitive factors of growth and development of children birth through adolescence. Topics covered include principles, stages and theories of growth and development. This course is for Child Development majors. A survey of information regarding children with special needs including possible causes and characteristics of exceptionalities, intervention strategies, available resources, referral processes, the advocacy role and legislative issues. Regularly scheduled observations of children are required. Prerequisite: DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. CDEC 1391 Special Topics in Family Life and Relations Studies
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Offered in Spring. A Developmental View of Family Studies- A study of parenting concepts, goals and strategies as they relate to the developmental stages of children from birth through early adulthood. Topics of work, diverse family structures and parenting in times of trauma will also be covered. Parenting- A study of the methods of parenting that encourage positive attitudes in children, explores the adult child relationship, including realistic principles that provide adults with the skills and understanding to confidently rear and teach children. Topics include: choosing parenthood, the early years, discipline, illness and death and societal support. Integration of these principles will be applied to a variety of settings through field projects. Parenting Methods- A study of the methods of parenting that encourages positive attitudes in children. Explores the adult/child relationship, including realistic principles that provide adults with the skills and understanding to confidently rear and teach children. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Offered in Spring. Observation Strategies for Teaching- A study of attitudes and behaviors pertinent to child development and to the student's professional development. Emphasis is placed on observing and recording children's behaviors and utilizing this information in an applied setting; professional ethic; and the workplace. Prerequisite: DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test and completion of 15-25 hours of CDEC courses and departmental approval. Corequisites: CDEC 1166 and DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test.

CDEC 1393 Special Topics in Early Childhood Education and Teaching
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Offered in Spring. Appropriate Teaching Methods- An in-depth study of the attitudes and behaviors pertinent to early childhood and to the student's professional development. Emphasis is placed on using developmentally appropriate practices in planning and teaching; professional ethics; building collaborative relationships with colleagues and families; and being a reflective teacher. Prerequisite: CDEC 1392, CDA credit, or department approval and DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Corequisites: CDEC 2166 and DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test.

CDEC 1413 Curriculum Resources for Early Childhood Programs
A study of the fundamentals of curriculum design and implementation in developmentally appropriate programs for children. Topics covered include developmentally appropriate practices; curricula models; and anti-bias curricula. Requires 3 hours per week of supervised fieldwork with young children. Prerequisite: TECA 1311 or CDEC 1311 and DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Student must be eligible for field experiences by passing a criminal background check through the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services and meet the Child Development Department's policies for field experiences. Corequisites: DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test.

CDEC 1417 Child Development Associate Training I
Based on the requirements for the Child Development Associate National Credential (CDA). Topics on CDA overview, general observation skills, and child growth and development overview. The four functional areas of study are creative, cognitive, physical, and communication. Students must be employed working with a group of children in 0-5 years range. Instructor visits will be scheduled.

CDEC 1419 Child Guidance
An exploration of guidance strategies for promoting prosocial behaviors with individual and groups of children. Emphasis on positive guidance principles and techniques, family involvement and cultural influences. Practical application through direct participation with children. Three hours per week of supervised fieldwork with young children is required. Offered in Spring. Prerequisite: TECA 1311 (or CDEC 1311), DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Corequisites: DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. CDEC 2166 Practicum (or Field Experience) -- Child Care Provider/Assistant II
A specialized, intensive workplace experience designed to strengthen a student's job skills by providing an opportunity to use acquired skills and techniques with young children. An individualized learning plan will be developed by the placement site, college and student. Ten hours per week of regularly scheduled lab experience is required; five hours of this must be completed at the ACC Lab School. Offered in Spring. Prerequisite: CDEC 1166, CDA credit or department approval. CDEC 2326 Administration of Programs for Children I
A practical application of management procedures for early care and education programs, including a study of planning, operating, supervising, and evaluating programs. Topics covered include program philosophy, types of programs, policies, fiscal management, regulations, staffing, evaluation and communication. Regularly scheduled field assignments are required. Offered in Fall. Prerequisite: TECA 1311 or CDEC 1311 or departmental approval and DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Corequisites: DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test.

CDEC 2328 Administration of Programs for Children II
An in-depth study of the skills and techniques in managing early care and education programs, including legal and ethical issues, personnel management, team building, leadership, conflict resolution, stress management, advocacy, professionalism, fiscal analysis and planning, parent education/partnerships, and technical applications in programs. Regularly scheduled field assignments are required. Offered in Spring. Prerequisite: CDEC 2326 or departmental approval and DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Corequisites: DEVR 1303 and DEVW 1403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test.

CDEC 2341 The School Age Child
A study of age appropriate child care programs for children 5 to 13 years old. Topics covered include an overview of school age development, developmentally appropriate environments, activities, planning and teaching techniques appropriate for school age children. Weekly observations of school age children are required. Offered in Spring. Prerequisite: DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Student must be eligible for field experiences by passing a criminal background check through the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services and meet the Child Development Department's policies for field experiences. CDEC 2407 Math and Science for Early Childhood
An exploration of principles, methods, and materials for teach children math and science concepts and process skills through discovery and play. Three hours per week of supervised fieldwork with young children is required. Offered in Spring. Prerequisite: TECA 1311 (or CDEC 1311) and CDEC 1413 (or concurrent enrollment in CDEC 1413) and DEVR 0303 and DEVW 0403 or satisfactory score on appropriate placement test. Student must be eligible for field experiences by passing a criminal background check through the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services and meet the Child Development Department's policies for field experiences. CDEC 2422 Child Development Associate Training II
A continuation of the study of the requirements for the Child Development Associate National Credential (CDA). The six functional areas of study include safe, healthy, learning environment, self, social, and guidance. Students must be employed working with a group of children in 0-5 years range. Instructor visits will be scheduled. Prerequisite: C or above in CDEC 1417.

CDEC 2424 Child Development Associate Training III
A continuation of the study of the requirements for the Child Development Associate National Credential (CDA). Three of the 13 functional areas of study include family, program management, and professionalism. Students must be employed working with a group of children in 0-5 years range. Instructor visits will be scheduled. Prerequisite: C or above in CDEC 1417.
