PHOTOGRAPHY

Students MUST furnish a digital camera capable of capturing in the RAW format. Students planning to continue in program beyond 1311 should invest in a digital camera with interchangeable lenses. Classes require outside of class assignments.

PHTC 1311 Fundamentals of Photography
An introduction to camera operation and image production, composition, supplemental lighting, and use of exposure meters and filters. Student may be required to use outside commercial lab services. Students must furnish an approved adjustable digital camera capable of capturing in the Camera Raw format. Prerequisite: Corequisites: PHTC 1400.

PHTC 1313 History of Photography
A historical survey of the technical and aesthetic development of photography. Topics include the beginnings of the medium, inventors, development of photographic equipment, styles of the creative masters, aesthetic themes, and the social impact of photography.

PHTC 1340 Photographic Retouching I
Using a variety of retouching techniques to enhance prints and negatives. Includes restoration and coloration. Requires visual acuity, accurate color perception, and good eye/hand coordination. Prerequisite: PHTC 2349.

PHTC 1341 Color Photography I
Examination of color theory as it applies to photography. Emphasis on color concepts and the intricacies of seeing and photographing in color along with digital asset management. Requires visual acuity, accurate color perception, and good eye/hand coordination. Prerequisite: PHTC 1400 and PHTC 1311. Corequisites: PHTC 2301.

PHTC 1343 Expressive Photography
A study of formal, professional, and individual uses of photography by applying photographic technology to personalized needs. Emphasis on creative visual thinking and problem solving and the exploration of personal vision. May be repeated for credit with the emphasis in the fall on personal vision and the spring on visual thinking and problem solving. Prerequisite: PHTC 1345 or PHTC 1353. Corequisites: PHTC 2271.

PHTC 1344 Close Up/Macro Photography
Industrial, scientific, commercial, and other areas of professional photography. Includes equipment, science, technology, and techniques for procedures required in accomplishing various kinds of close up and macro photography. Student may use an outside lab. Offered in the Fall. Prerequisite: PHTC 2301. Corequisites: PHTC 2271.

PHTC 1345 Illustrative Photography I
Instruction in the technical aspects involved in commercial photography. Topics include lighting equipment, techniques of production photography, reproduction principles, illustrative techniques, and advertising. Prerequisite: PHTC 2301. Corequisites: PHTC 2271.

PHTC 1347 Landscape Photography
Skill development in the inspection of the landscape visually and photographically utilizing various camera formats. Topics include exploration of historic, geographical, and cultural locations, and review of landscape photographers. Prerequisite: PHTC 2301. Corequisites: PHYC 2271.

PHTC 1351 Photojournalism I
Presentation of photographic techniques used by photojournalists in newspapers, magazines, and trade publications including news, feature, sports, editorial portraits, and photo essays. Includes a study of layout design and the freelance market. Prerequisite: PHTC 2301 and PHTC 1341. Corequisites: PHTC 2271.

PHTC 1353 Portraiture I
Photographic principles applied to portrait lighting, posing, and subject rapport. Students will use a variety of lighting techniques both in the studio and outside of class. Students will be required to furnish their own subjects. Prerequisite: PHTC 2301. Corequisites: PHTC 2271.

PHTC 1400 Photo Digital Imaging I
Computer and software instruction for electronic imaging. Includes color, gray scale, image conversion, presentation, and ethics. Students must have basic computer knowledge and an understanding of file management. Requires visual acuity, accurate color perception, and good eye/hand coordination. Class is taught on the Macintosh platform. Prerequisite: Corequisites: PHTC 1311 or with department approval.

PHTC 2271 Advanced Imaging Lab
Refined skill development in advanced color and black and white image production. Requires visual acuity, accurate color perception, and good eye/hand coordination. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: PHTC 1341 and PHTC 2349. Corequisites: Must be taken concurrently with advanced level camera course or may be taken as a stand alone class with department approval.

PHTC 2301 Intermediate Photography
Continuation of Fundamentals of Photography. Emphasizes social, portrait, studio, fashion, theatrical, publicity, and event photography. Student will work both in the studio and on location. Student must provide a Digital Camera capable of capturing in the RAW format. Prerequisite: PHTC 1311 and PHTC 1400. Corequisites: PHTC 1341.

PHTC 2345 Illustrative Photography II
A continuation of the study of commercial photographic principles with an emphasis on enhancing technical and creative quality. Student will use a variety of equipment to produce images for use in periodical and catalog advertising. Prerequisite: PHTC 1345. Corequisites: Student may use an outside photo lab for prints and processing or must take PHTC 2271 concurrently.

PHTC 2349 Photo Digital Imaging II
Continued skill development in the use of the computer and software for photographic manipulation and output. Prerequisite: PHTC 1400.

PHTC 2353 Portraiture II
A continuation of the study of principles of effective portraiture with specific emphasis on unique presentation and environmental and location studies. Prerequisite: PHTC 1353 and PHTC 1340 (may be taken concurrently.) Corequisites: Student may use an outside photo lab for printing and processing or must take PHTC 2271.

PHTC 2440 Photographic Studio Management
Examination of photographic management, pricing, market analysis, promotion, networking, job acquisition, photographic equipment analysis, and photo lab selection. Requires field trips for information gathering. Prerequisite: PHTC 1345 or PHTC 1353.
