RECT 1301 Introduction to Therapeutic Recreation
Introduction to the value, history, philosophy, terminology, process, and outcomes of therapeutic recreation. Emphasis on identification of client groups, leisure activities, application of therapeutic recreation in human services various settings, and professional development and career opportunities. Fieldwork is required.
SCWK 1301 Adolescent Life Cycle
Study of the developmental phases from adolescence through young adulthood and the tasks and goals to be achieved during these stages. Topics include physiological and psychological changes, interpersonal relationships, and the individual's ability to relate to the social environment. Emphasis on critical areas of the adolescent period of the life cycle.
SCWK 1305 Group Work Intervention
Examination of the various stages of the group work treatment process with emphasis on roles, tasks, and potential problem areas. Topics include mechanics of group function, structure of groups, communication patterns within groups, effective group facilitation skills, and techniques used to address special population issues and needs. Prerequisite: PSYT 2339.
PSYT 1313 Psychology of Personal Adjustment
Development of personal, social, and work adjustment skills. Exploration will include open communication, assertiveness, self-disclosure, and building relationships with group members in a way that enhances trust and mutual concern. Knowledge gained in class is designed to transfer to actual working situations.
SLNG 1317 Introduction to the Deaf Community
An overview of the physical, educational, social, and cultural implications of deafness and hearing loss within the context of the individual's personal life, family, and community in today's multicultural world. Emphasis on current educational and vocational programs, legislation, technology, and other issues.
DAAC 1319 Introduction to Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions
Causes and consequences of addiction as they relate to the individual, family, community, and society are discussed. Response alternatives regarding intervention, treatment, education, and prevention are reviewed. Competencies and requirements for licensure in Texas are explained. Addiction issues related to diverse populations are presented.
SCWK 1321 Orientation to Social Services
Introduction to the basic concepts, information, and practices within the field of social services. Topics include a survey of the historical development of social services; social, legal, and clinical definitions; and review of current information regarding indications for and methods of treatment and/or services.
CMSW 1323 The Exceptional Person
This course will provide an overview of the disabling conditions most often encountered by human service professionals. Studies will include sensory deficits, physical, intellectual and learning disabilities as well as giftedness. Attitudes, definitions, etiologies, prevalence, treatments and service delivery systems will be discussed. Fieldwork is required.
RECT 1341 Therapeutic Recreation Leadership I
Provides the student with the knowledge and practice necessary to plan and implement therapeutic activities that involve music, drama, dance, arts, and crafts. Focus on the range of individuals who may benefit from these activities. Leadership skills, rather than mastery of performance skills, will be stressed. Fieldwork is required.
RECT 1342 Therapeutic Recreation Leadership II
Provides the student with the knowledge and practice necessary to plan and implement therapeutic activities that involve sports, games, fitness, and outdoor recreation activities with emphasis on the range of individuals who benefit from these activities. Leadership skills, rather than mastery of performance, will be stressed. Fieldwork is required.
SCWK 1391 Special Topics in Social Work
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.
Ethical Issues in Human Services--Discussion of ethical issues that pose dilemmas in the delivery of human services. Some of these dilemmas are dual relationships, confidentiality, reporting child abuse, physician-assisted suicide, professional boundaries, and patient rights.
SLNG 1391 Special Topics in Sign Language Interpreter
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.
Structure of ASL-- A general introduction to the scientific study of language structure, history, and use. Topics include spoken (and signed) language; the structure of sounds/signs, words, sentences, and meanings; language in culture and society; language change over time; language acquisition and processing, and variations in the structure of ASL will be studied according to region, social class, ethnicity, age and sex.
Prerequisite: Prior completion or concurrent enrollment in SLNG 2431.
SGNL 1401 American Sign Language (ASL) I
An introduction to the basic skills in production and comprehension of American Sign Language (ASL). Includes the manual alphabet and numbers. Develops conversational ability, culturally appropriate behaviors, and exposes students to ASL grammar. This course is equivalent to SLNG 1404.
SGNL 1402 American Sign Language (ASL) II
Develops receptive and expressive ability and allows recognition and demonstration of more sophisticated grammatical features of American Sign Language (ASL). Increases fluency and accuracy in fingerspelling and numbers. Provides opportunities for interaction within the deaf community. Course requires significant time outside of class. This course is equivalent to SLNG 1405. Prerequisite: SLNG 1404 or SGNL 1401 with a minimum grade of C.
SGNL 2301 American Sign Language (ASL) III
Integrates and refines expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language (ASL), including recognition of sociolinguistic variation. A practice oriented approach to language acquisition with demonstration of more sophisticated grammatical features of American Sign Language (ASL). Increases fluency and accuracy in fingerspelling and numbers. Provides opportunities for interaction within the deaf community. Course requires significant time outside of class. This course is equivalent to SLNG 1444. Prerequisite: SLNG 1405 or SGNL 1402 with minimum grade C.
SGNL 2302 American Sign Language (ASL) IV
An integration of expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language (ASL) with emphasis on grammar, linguistics, literature, and discourse styles at an intermediate level. Provides students with information on linguistic and cultural variations. Course requires significant time outside of class. This course is equivalent to SLNG 1445. Prerequisite: SLNG 1444 or SGNL 2301 with minimum grade C.
DAAC 2307 Addicted Family Intervention
An introduction to the family as a dynamic system focusing on the effects of addiction pertaining to family roles, rules, and behavior patterns. Discusses the impact of mood altering substances and behaviors and therapeutic alternatives as they relate to the family from a multicultural and transgenerational perspective. Prerequisite: DAAC 1319.
SLNG 2315 Interpreting in Educational Settings
Increases awareness of current techniques, issues, and ethics in mainstreaming and bilingual/bicultural education practices. Includes a survey of technical signs and signed English systems currently in use. Prerequisite: SLNG 2401 or permission of instructor.
SLNG 2334 American Sign Language (ASL) V
Development of proficiency in ASL. Includes instruction in semantic and grammatical accuracy and appropriate discourse strategies in a variety of communication contexts. Prerequisite: SLNG 1445 or SGNL 2302 with a minimum grade of C.
SLNG 2335 American Sign Language (ASL) VI
Advanced practice in expressive and receptive communication within a variety of settings and contexts. Includes exposure to diverse ASL language models and registers. Prerequisite: SLNG 2334 with a minimum grade C.
PSYT 2339 Counseling Theories
An examination of major theories of various treatment modalities. Topics include reality therapy, psychodynamics, grief therapy, person-centered therapy, rational emotive therapy, and cognitive behavioral approaches. Attention is given to the role of counselor as part of the total spectrum of human services.
DAAC 2341 Counseling Alcohol and Other Drug Addictions
Special skills and techniques in the application of counseling skills for the Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) client. Development and utilization of advanced treatment planning and management. Includes review of confidentiality and ethical issues. Prerequisite: DAAC 1319.
SLNG 2401 Interpreting I
An overview of the interpreting process and current models. Introduces the skills necessary to achieve message equivalency in interpreting. Prerequisite: SGNL 2302 with a minimum grade C.
SLNG 2402 Interpreting II
Enhancement of interpreting skills and discourse analysis to increasingly complex tasks utilizing simulated interpreting experiences via multimedia materials. Emphasis on skill analysis and peer evaluation. Prerequisite: SLNG 2401.
SLNG 2431 Interpreting III
A practice oriented course to strengthen skills in the integration and application of processing more complex selections. Continued exposure to simulated interpreting experience through the use of multimedia material. Prerequisite: SLNG 2402 with a minimum grade of C.
SCWK 2486 Internship I -- Social Work
An experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the educational institution and a business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to specific occupational outcomes. This may be a paid or unpaid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Prerequisite: Student must obtain department approval in semester prior to enrollment.

An experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the educational institution and a business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to specific occupational outcomes.
