Course Descriptions All Courses
GEOG 1301 Introduction to Physical Geography
This course introduces the student to an area of study that brings together and interrelates the important elements of the physical environment of humans. The nature and characteristics of the physical environment, their development and distribution are emphasized.

GEOG 1302 Introduction to Cultural Geography
This course explores how humans create "places" through culture and their adaptation to the physical environment. Formal and functional aspects of spatial decision making are stressed.

GEOG 1303 World and Regional Geography
This course focuses on the culture and physical environments of the world's geographic regions. It is both a survey course and an introduction to the discipline of geography.

GISC 1391 Special Topics in Cartography
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. GIS Capstone - A capstone instructional program designed to integrate on-campus study with practical hands-on experience in Geographic Information Systems. In conjunction with class seminars, the individual student will set specific goals and objectives in the study of Geographic Information Systems. Prerequisite: GEOG 2470.

GISC 1491 Special Topics in Cartography
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Cartography - This course introduces the student to reference and thematic map use and design. It examines basic cartographic mapping techniques for quantitative and qualitative data, teaches about geospatial analysis and interpretation, and enables students to design basic maps that communicate information effectively. Topics covered include the basics in mapping (i.e. scale, spatial reference systems, and projections), data acquisition and organization, key techniques for thematic mapping, and the principles of cartographic abstraction and design.

GISC 2164 Practicum (or Field Experience) – Cartography
Practical, general workplace training supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student. A capstone experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field. This is a practical, general workplace training experience supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student. It involves a written agreement between the educational institution and a government agency, business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college that directly relate to specific occupational outcomes. This may be paid or unpaid experience and may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Prerequisite: GEOG 2471.

GISC 2280 Cooperative Education - Cartography
This course focuses on career-related activities encountered in the student's area of specialization offered through an individualized agreement among the college, employer, and student. Under the supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. It includes a lecture component. Prerequisite: GEOG 2471.

GEOG 2470 Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a computer-based tool that uses spatial (geographic) data to analyze and solve real-world problems. This course is designed to introduce the student to the basic principles and techniques of GIS. The lab material will emphasize GIS data collection, entry, storage, analysis, and output using ArcGIS.

GEOG 2471 GIS II
Advanced GIS is designed for the student who wants to pursue a career in GIS. The course will focus on sophisticated spatial analyses such as density mapping, least-cost analysis, map algebra, line-of-sight analysis, and spatial modeling using ESRI's Spatial Analyst and 3-D Analyst extensions. The course also will explore geodatabases, as well as planning, designing, and implementing a scalable, enterprise-wide GIS. Prerequisite: GEOG 2470.
