HPRS 1106 Essentials of Medical Terminology PCM
A short course of study of prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. A body systems approach is used to focus on select abbreviations and symbols, surgical, pathological, and diagnostic procedures. This web course allows the flexibility of participating in individual study and group study. Internet access is required.
HPRS 1206 Essentials of Medical Terminology
A study of word origin and structure through the introduction of prefixes, suffixes, root words, plurals, abbreviations and symbols, surgical procedures, medical specialties, and diagnostic procedures.
HPRS 1273 Pharmacology
This course is designed to give the students basic pharmacology terminology with a major emphasis on major drug classification, mechanism of action, uses, side effects, and client education, where applicable. An introduction to prescription abbreviations will be covered. This course is designed for Medical Coding, Medical Assisting, and Dental Hygiene students. This is not an acceptable course for Clinical Nursing, Surgical Technologists, and Emergency Medical Service students. Prerequisite: Completion of 4 hours of Anatomy & Physiology (Biology 2404 or MDCA 1409), or Human Anatomy (BIOL 2304/2101) with a grade of C or better OR pass the departmental assessment examination. Bring proofs of prerequisites to orientation or first class meeting (grade report or transcript). There will be no exceptions.
HPRS 2300 Pharmacology for Health Professions
A study of drug classifications, actions, therapeutic uses, adverse effects, methods of administration, client education, and calculation of dosages. This course is designed for Surgery Technicians, Nursing and Emergency Medical Service students. Prerequisite: Human Anatomy (BIOL 2304/2101) OR Human Physiology (BIOL 2305/2102) OR Anatomy & Physiology (BIOL 2404) (4 hours) with a grade of C or better OR pass a departmental assessment exam AND passed math assessment (Compass 39 or higher) OR passed TASP math (230 or higher) OR passed THEA math (230 or higher) OR passed a math course above MATD 0330 with a grade of C or better. Bring proof of prerequisites to orientation or first class meeting (grade report, transcripts, and math scores). Exempt students of TSI, need proof of a math course or passed the ACC Math Assessment.
HPRS 2301 Pathophysiology
Study of the pathology and general health management of disease and injuries across the life span. Topics include etiology, symptoms, and the physical and psychological reactions to diseases and injuries. Prerequisite: Completion of 4 hours of Anatomy and Physiology (MDCA 1409 or BIOL 2404) or Human Anatomy (BIOL 2304/2101) AND 1 or 2 or 3 hour Medical Terminology course (HPRS 1106 or HPRS 1206 or HITT 1305). Bring proofs of prerequisites to first class meeting or orientation (grade report, transcript). There will be no exceptions.
