Course Descriptions All Courses
BITC 1191 Special Topics in Biological Technology/Technician
Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency. Special Studies and Bioethical Issues of Biotechnology--Current events, skills, attitudes, and behaviors pertinent to biotechnology and relevant to the professional development of the student. Includes exploration of ethical and legal behaviors in the context of the biotechnology industry.

BITC 1200 Fundamentals of Biological Sciences
Skills and concepts necessary to work in the biotechnology industry, allied health, or other biology-related fields. Emphasizes applied mathematics, communication skills, and core science knowledge and applications.

BITC 1240 Quality Assurance for the Biosciences
Quality assurance principles and applications. Includes quality control and Federal Drug Administration (FDA) regulations to the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and biomedical device industries.

BITC 1311 Introduction to Biotechnology
An introduction to biotechnology including career exploration, history and applications of DNA/RNA technology, molecular biology, bioethics, and laboratory safe practices. The course is supplemented with laboratory exercises, demonstrations and field trips that illustrate the basic techniques of biotechnology including laboratory topics, and finally the course concludes with a consideration of bioethical issues relating to this powerful new technology. Prerequisite: One year of high school biology and one year of high school chemistry or BIOL 1406 or the equivalent.

BITC 1402 Biotechnology Laboratory Methods and Techniques
Emphasis is on researching information on the computer, laboratory operations, management, equipment, instrumentation, quality control techniques, and safety procedures. Lecture emphasis will be on biochemistry and bioorganic topics. Laboratory practice will be in lab safety, mixing buffers, preparing solutions, and performing organic chemistry including separation techniques that are used in industry. Prerequisite: BITC 1311, MATH 1314, BIOL 1406, CHEM 1411.

BITC 2350 Bioinformatics
Current topics in bioinformatics and computational biology. Includes methods for high-throughput data collection, storing, and accessing biological data. Covers programs and algorithms used to analyze data. Prerequisite: BITC 1311.

BITC 2411 Biotechnology Laboratory Instrumentation
Lecture will discuss theory, applications, and operation of various analytical instruments with an emphasis on protein purification in both an R&D laboratory and a biomanufacturing facility. Laboratory exercises will focus on quantitative and qualitative analyses by chromatography, centrifugation, spechtrophotometry, and electrophoresis. An introduction to protein bioinformatic tools is included. Prerequisite: BITC 2401 or department approval.

BITC 2486 Internship - Biology Technician/Biotechnology Laboratory Technician I
The experience can be internal to the college where the student prepares kits for the Biotechnology Center for distribution under the supervision of a trained ACC instructor. Activities include designing and refining laboratory protocols for the classroom use. Or the experience can be external to the college, where the student is mentored and supervised by a workplace employee. This may be paid or unpaid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. (Capstone for certificate or elective for A.A.S.). Prerequisite: Assigned by the College.

BITC 2487 Internship - Biology Technician/Biotechnology Laboratory Technician II
This is an experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the educational institution and a business or industry partner. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college that directly relate to specific occupational outcomes. This may be paid or unpaid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. (Capstone course for A.A.S.).
