DENTAL HYGIENE
16 Week Session August 27 - December 16
DHYG 1227 Preventive Dental Hygiene Care
Study of the dental hygienist in the dental health care system and the basic concepts of disease prevention and health promotion. Communication and behavior modification skills are emphasized to facilitate the role of the dental hygienist as an educator. Includes etiology of dental disease, plaque control, oral physiotherapy, and methodology of oral health instruction. Prerequisite: Admission to Dental Hygiene Program.
DHYG 1239 General and Oral Pathology
General study of disturbances in human body development, diseases of the body, and disease prevention measures. Emphasis on the oral cavity and associated structures. Study will include traits, causes, and effects of diseases to include immunological factors. There is emphasis on the disturbances found in the oral cavity and the assessment and differentiation of normal and abnormal conditions. Prerequisite: Admission to the program; successful completion of program semester 1 and DHYG 1207.
DHYG 1301 Orofacial Anatomy, Histology and Embryology
The histology and embryology or oral tissues, gross anatomy of the head and neck, tooth morphology, and individual tooth identification. Emphasis is placed on clinical considerations of oral development and anatomy relevant to dental hygiene practice. The laboratory includes manikin and student partner experiences. Prerequisite: Admission to the program.
DHYG 1304 Dental Radiology
A study of radiation physics, hygiene, and safety theories. Emphasis on the fundamentals of oral radiographic techniques and interpretation of radiographs. Includes exposure of intra-oral radiographs, quality assurance, radiographic interpretation, patient selection criteria, and other ancillary radiographic techniques. The laboratory setting includes manikin and student-partner experiences. Prerequisite: Admission to the program.
DHYG 1311 Periodontology
Study of normal and diseased periodontium to include the structural, functional, and environmental factors. Emphasis on etiology, pathology, treatment modalities, and therapeutic and preventive periodontics in a contemporary private practice setting. Prerequisite: Admission to the Program; successful completion of program semester 1. DHYG 1207 and DHYG 1260.
DHYG 1315 Community Dentistry
Study of the principles and concepts of community public health and dental health education with an emphasis on community assessment, educational planning, implementation, and evaluation. Additionally, this course includes a study of basic research principles to facilitate the reading and reviewing of professional, scientific, and trade literature in order to counsel clients and groups accordingly. The Laboratory emphasizes methods and materials used in teaching dental health education in various community settings and extern-site presentations. Prerequisite: Admission to the Program; successful completion of Program semesters 1 and 2, PSYC 2301, SPCH 1315, and MATH 1342.
DHYG 1331 Preclinical Dental Hygiene
Foundational knowledge for performing clinical skills on patients. Emphasis on principles, procedures, and professionalism for performing comprehensive oral prophylaxis. The laboratory includes manikin and student-partner experiences. $270 Clinic Leasing. Prerequisite: Admission to the Program; BIOL 2420 and DHYG 1301 must be taken concurrently or completion prior.
DHYG 2201 Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care I
Introduction to dental hygiene care for the medically and dentally compromised patient. Emphasizes supplemental instrumentation techniques. This course deals with the prevention, recognition, and management of medical and dental emergencies with specific emphasis on systemic disease processes. Additionally this course includes an introduction to the study of health care ethics. Prerequisite: Admission to the Program; successful completion of program semester 1. DHYG 1260.
DHYG 2261 Clinical - Dental Hygiene/Hygienist II
The second of the progressive clinical courses that utilize the process of care model of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. In this competency-based clinical course students provide comprehensive dental hygiene care for medically compromised and moderately complex adult patient treatment cases. A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Clinical education is an unpaid learning experience. $270 Clinic Leasing. Prerequisite: Admission to the Program. DHYG 1260. Concurrent enrollment or successful completion of DHYG 1311.
