Emphasis on development of vocabulary necessary for basic communication and comprehension of simple passages and functional materials. Repeatable up to six credit hours. ESL 0613 DEVELOPING READING SKILLS ESL 2 (3-3-0). Designed for high beginning ESL students. Emphasis on comprehension skills, such as identifying main idea, supporting details, and patterns of paragraph development. Features reading passages of paragraph length and functional adult reading materials. Repeatable up to six credit hours. The same course is offered in a one hour (0611) and two hour (0612) format. ESL 0631 INTRODUCTION TO BASIC GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 1 (1-1-0).
ESL 0632 INTRODUCTION TO BASIC GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 1 (2-2-0).
ESL 0633 INTRODUCTION TO BASIC GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 1 (3-3-0). Designed for beginning ESL students. Emphasis on basic past and present verb tenses, subject verb agreement, and basic sentence structure, including negatives and question formation, modal auxiliaries, adjectives, adverbs, and prepositions in simple sentence structures. Class activities include much oral practice. Corequisite: Introduction to Basic Writing Skills - ESL 1 and Writing Skills I ESL lab. Repeatable up to six credit hours. ESL 0642 DEVELOPING GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 2 (2-2-0).
ESL 0643 DEVELOPING GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 2 (3-3-0). Designed for high beginning ESL students. Further study of verb tenses (past, future, and imperative) and modal auxiliaries. Emphasis on count/non count nouns, quantifiers, pronouns, and adverbs of time and place. Practice in writing simple and compound sentences, using correct transition and mechanics. Class activities include much oral practice. Corequisite: Developing Writing Skills - ESL 2 and Writing Skills ESL lab. Repeatable up to six credit hours. ESL 0653 INTRODUCTION TO BASIC WRITING SKILLS ESL 1 (3-3-0). Designed for beginning ESL students. Emphasis on writing simple sentences and groups of sentences with attention to correct subject-verb agreement, correct word order, and punctuation. Practice in writing guided paragraphs in the descriptive mode and guided paragraphs based on personal experience. Corequisite: Introduction to Basic Grammar Skills - ESL 1. and Writing Skills I ESL lab. Repeatable up to six credit hours. The same course is offered in a one hour (0651) and two hour (0652) format. ESL 0662 DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS ESL 2 (2-2-0).
ESL 0663 DEVELOPING WRITING SKILLS ESL 2 (3-3-0). Designed for high beginning ESL students. Emphasis on writing compound sentences using different coordinating conjunctions and correct punctuation. Practice in writing guided paragraphs using simple tenses. Exposure to and practice with narrative, descriptive, classification, and process modes. Introduction to letter-writing. Corequisite: Developing Grammar Skills - ESL 2 and Writing Skills I lab. Repeatable up to six credit hours. The same course is offered in a one hour (0661) and two hour (0662) format. ESL 0672 INTRODUCTION TO SPEECH AND CONVERSATION ESL 1 (2-2-0).
ESL 0673 INTRODUCTION TO SPEECH AND CONVERSATION ESL 1 (3-3-0). Designed for low beginning ESL students. Exposure to oral language in a variety of beginning, yet relevant contexts. Emphasis on communicating in functional situations involving greetings; asking for information; talking about daily activities; and describing familiar people and places. Practice with level-appropriate grammatical forms and listening skills, including the basics in voice and speech. Repeatable up to six credit hours. The same course is offered in a one hour (0671) and two hour (0672) format. Prerequisites: ACC ESL Assessment.

ESL 0681 DEVELOPING SPEECH AND CONVERSATION ESL 2 (1-1-0).
ESL 0682 DEVELOPING SPEECH AND CONVERSATION ESL 2 (2-2-0).
ESL 0683 DEVELOPING SPEECH AND CONVERSATION ESL 2 (3-3-0). Designed for high beginning ESL students. Emphasis on communicating effectively in functional situations involving asking for and giving advice; telling stories; asking for clarification; and summarizing oral and reading material. Practice with level-appropriate grammatical forms. Development of good listening skills as students learn how to use stress, intonation, and rhythm in their own speech. ESL 1372 EXPANDING READING SKILLS ESL 3 (2-2-0).
ESL 1373 EXPANDING READING SKILLS ESL 3 (3-3-0). Designed for low intermediate ESL students. Emphasis on analytical components of reading, such as drawing conclusions, distinguishing fact from opinion, and determining author's purpose. Introduces various study skills for academic reading. Focuses on development of vocabulary through analysis of word structure through roots and affixes. Corequisite: Reading Skills I ESL lab. Repeatable up to six credit hours. ESL 1381 CRITICAL READING SKILLS ESL 4 (1-1-0).
ESL 1382 CRITICAL READING SKILLS ESL 4 (2-2-0).
ESL 1383 CRITICAL READING SKILLS ESL 4 (3-3-0). Designed for high intermediate ESL students. Emphasis on development of vocabulary, comprehension, and study skills necessary for success in vocational, two-year, and transfer programs. Repeatable up to six credit hours. ESL 1391 ADVANCED READING SKILS ESL 5 (1-1-0).
ESL 1392 ADVANCED READING SKILS ESL 5 (2-2-0).
ESL 1393 ADVANCED READING SKILLS ESL 5 (3-3-0). Designed for advanced ESL students. Emphasis on critical and analytical reading skills and advanced applications of study skills to college-level reading passages, novels, and periodicals. Continued expansion of vocabulary skills, including use of idiomatic expressions. Repeatable up to six credit hours. The same course is offered in a one hour (1391) and two hour (1392) format. Prerequisites: Critical Reading Skills - ESL 4 or ACC ESL Assessment.

ESL 1441 EXPANDING GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 3 (1-1-0).
ESL 1442 EXPANDING GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 3 (2-2-0).
ESL 1443 EXPANDING GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 3 (3-3-0). Designed for low intermediate ESL students. Continued study of compound verb tenses and introduction to present perfect and modal auxiliaries. Introduction to phrasal verbs, gerunds and infinitives, comparative and superlative forms, noun clauses and direct speech. Practice in writing compound and complex sentences using correct transition and mechanics. Class activities include much oral practice. Corequisite Expanding Writing Skills and Writing Skills I ESL lab. Repeatable up to six credit hours. The same course is offered in a one hour (1441) and two hour (1142) format. ESL 1451 CONTEXTUAL GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 4 (1-1-0).
ESL 1452 CONTEXTUAL GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 4 (2-2-0).
ESL 1453 CONTEXTUAL GRAMMAR SKILLS ESL 4 (3-3-0). Designed for high intermediate/advanced ESL students. Continued study of more complex verb tenses including the perfect tenses, modal auxiliaries, gerunds and infinitives. Emphasis on adjective, noun, and adverbial clauses showing relationships. Introduction to the passive and the conditionals. Practice in writing compound and complex sentences using correct transition and mechanics. Class activities include much oral practice. ESL 1463 ADVANCED GRAMMAR AND EDITING ESL 5 (3-3-0). Designed for advanced ESL students. Review and study of all verb tenses and modal auxiliaries; the passive voice; gerunds and infinitives; singular and plural; adjective, noun and adverbial clauses; relationships between ideas, and the conditional. Practice in writing a variety of sentence structures using correct transition and mechanics. Class activities include oral practice. Repeatable up to six credit hours. Emphasis on writing more compound and complex sentence structures with appropriate conjunctions, transitional expressions, and punctuation. Practice on paragraph development and longer pieces of formal and informal writing. Practice in different modes including description, chronological order, comparison/contrast, process, definition, argumentation, and letter-writing. Focus on making simple outlines and editing. ESL 1483 CRITICAL WRITING SKILLS ESL 4 (3-3-0). Designed for high intermediate ESL students. Emphasis on learning the basics of formal essay writing and writing a variety of expository paragraphs and essays. Focus on error correction and editing. Includes using the library to locate and collect resource materials. Practice in different modes including description, chronological order, comparison/contrast, cause and effect, process, definition, analysis, argumentation. Repeatable up to six credit hours. ESL 1493 ADVANCED WRITING SKILLS ESL 5 (3-3-0). Designed for advanced ESL students. Emphasis on essay development and editing. Practice in writing more sophisticated, formal essays in selected modes of writing, especially in the persuasive and argumentative modes. Focus on outlining for essays, writing essay exams, and researching specific topics in the library. Repeatable up to six credit hours. ESL 1771 EXPANDING SPEECH AND CONVERSATION ESL 3 (1-1-0).

ESL 1773 EXPANDING SPEECH AND CONVERSATION ESL 3 (3-3-0). Designed for low intermediate ESL students. Emphasis on real-life oral discourse involving comparing and contrasting familiar persons, places, and objects; reporting information; giving oral presentations on familiar topics; and explaining how to do something. Practice with level-appropriate grammatical forms. Development of good listening skills as students learn how to transcribe their own speech and vary pitch level, stress, emphasis, intonation, and rhythm in a variety of speech acts. ESL 1793 ADVANCED ORAL COMMUNICATION ESL 5 (3-3-0). Designed for advanced ESL students. Emphasis on the development and effective usage of more complex academic/vocational functions and conversation strategies involving reporting a conversation using indirect speech; defending one's position on a controversial topic; using complex conditional structures; and evaluating the speech and oral presentations of others. Practice with level-appropriate grammatical forms. Development of good listening skills as students select appropriate use of pitch, stress, emphasis, intonation, rate, rhythm, phrasing, and pauses for various types of oral communication. Evaluation of these elements in the speech of others. Organization and practice of various vocal warm-up exercises, including relaxation, posture, and breathing. Repeatable up to six credit hours.
