DVM 1051 TASP MATH PREPARATION (1-0-2). Designed to prepare students with minimal math deficiencies to perform effectively in college-level course work as defined by the Texas Academic Skills Program.
DVM 1103 BASIC MATH SKILLS (3-3-0). A course designed to develop basic arithmetic skills prior to beginning a sequence of algebra courses; the first of which is Pre-algebra, DVM 1153. Content includes operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals, ratio and proportions and percent. Repeatable up to four credit hours. The same course is offered in a one hour (1101) and two hour (1102) format.
DVM 1121 BUILDING SUCCESS IN MATHEMATICS (1-2-0). A course designed to focus on seeking patterns and building strategies for problem-solving in mathematics. A nontraditional approach using hands-on materials and small group activities will be emphasized. Content includes non-routine problem solving, how to read mathematical information, and how to study mathematics.
DVM 1121.1B WORD PROBLEMS (1-2-0). A course designed for students currently enrolled in Elementary Algebra, DVM 1173 or Intermediate Algebra, DVM 1193, to develop the skills necessary to solve word problems. Content includes English to mathematics translation and techniques for solving a variety of problem types including coin problems, rate problems, mixture problems, percent problems, and geometric problems.
DVM 1153 PREALGEBRA (3-4-0). A course between arithmetic and algebra while including a review of some topics in arithmetic (fractions, decimals, etc.), the focus of the course will be an introduction to the concepts of algebra: variables, simplification and evaluation of algebraic expressions, solutions of linear equations in one and two variables, straight line graphs, etc. Emphasis will be placed on setting up and solving word problems, relating simple algebraic concepts to geometry. The same course is offered in a one hour (1151) and two hour (1152) format. Prerequisites: C or better in Basic Math Skills, DVM 1103, its equivalent knowledge, or a passing score on the DVM 1153 placement test.
DVM 1163 TOPICS IN DEVELOPMENTAL MATHEMATICS (3-4-0). This course surveys a variety of mathematical topics needed to prepare student for the college-level courses MTH 1513, 1563, 1583. It also covers most TASP mathematics topics. Topics include the arithmetic of integers and rational numbers, evaluating expressions and formulas, calculator use, problem-solving using data interpretation and analysis, informal geometry, pattern recognition, percentages, ratio and proportion, measurements, algebraic techniques for solving linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, rational equations, systems of equations, etc. Students who need to prepare for MTH 1743 College Algebra, MTH 1643 Math for Business & Economics, MTH 1753 Trigonometry, etc., should take DVM 1173 (Elementary Algebra) and DVM 1193 (Intermediate Algebra) rather than this course. The same course is offered in a one hour (1161) and two hour (1162) format. Prerequisites: A passing grade of C or better in DVM 1153 (Prealgebra) or an acceptable score on the ACC assessment test.
DVM 1173 ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA (3-4-0). A course designed to develop the skills and understanding contained in the first year of secondary school algebra. Topics include arithmetic of positive and negative numbers; products and factoring; algebraic fractions; and equations. The same course is offered in a one hour (1171) and two hour (1172) format. Prerequisites: C or better in Prealgebra, DVM 1153, or its equivalent knowledge, or passing score on the DVM 1173 placement test.
DVM 1183 GEOMETRY (3-3-0). A course designed to develop skills and understanding of plane, solid and transformational geometry. Topics include geometric constructions and transformation polygons, polyhedrons, circles, area, volume, congruence, similarity, theorems, and proofs. The same course is offered in a one hour (1181) and two hour (1182) format. Prerequisites: C or better in Prealgebra, DVM 1173, or its equivalent knowledge, or passing score on the DVM 1183 placement test.
DVM 1193 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA (3-3-0). A course designed to develop the skills and understanding contained in the second year of algebra. Topics include the properties of the real numbers; operations on polynomials and fractions; special products and factoring; radicals and rational exponents; solutions of linear, fractional, and quadratic equations; systems of linear equations; inequalities; coordinate systems; and graphing. The same course is offered in a one hour (1191) and two hour (1192) format. Prerequisites: C or better in Prealgebra, DVM 1173, or its equivalent knowledge, or passing score on the DVM 1193 placement test.
