GISC 1491 SPECIAL TOPICS IN CARTOGRAPHY (4-3-3). Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledges, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. This course was designed to be repeated multiple times to improve student proficiency.

Cartography - This course introduces the student to reference and thematic map use and design. It examines basic cartographic mapping techniques for quantitative and qualitative data, teaches about geospatial analysis and interpretation, and enables students to design basic maps that communicate information effectively. Topics covered include the basics in mapping (i.e. scale, spatial reference systems, and projections), data acquisition and organization, key techniques for thematic mapping, and the principles of cartographic abstraction and design. Fee: $24 Insurance: $3.50Skills: K ( ) Course Type: W

GISC 2164 PRACTICUM (OR FIELD EXPERIENCE) – CARTOGRAPHY (1-0-7). Practical, general workplace training supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student. A capstone experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field. This is a practical, general workplace training experience supported by an individualized learning plan developed by the employer, college, and student. It involves a written agreement between the educational institution and a government agency, business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college that directly relate to specific occupational outcomes. This may be paid or unpaid experience and may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Insurance: $3.50Skills: G Prerequisites: GEOG 2471. ( ) Course Type: W

GISC 2231 ADVANCED PROBLEMS IN GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS) (2-2-1). This seminar course is designed for the final semester of a degree or certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Projects will include individual and group studies of GIS applications using the skills acquired in previous courses. The student will produce a professional project and present the results to a panel consisting of peers, instructors, and/or practicing GIS professionals.
