DHYG 1207 GENERAL AND DENTAL NUTRITION (2-2-0). General nutrition and nutritional biochemistry with emphasis on the effects of nutrition, dental health, diet, and application of counseling strategies. Issues related to nutrition and oral health in the context of chronic disease, special care patients, stages of life, health promotion, and food safety concepts are also presented. DHYG 1227 PREVENTIVE DENTAL HYGIENE CARE (2-1-3). The dental hygienist in the dental health care system emphasizing the basic concepts of disease prevention and health promotion. Communication and behavior modification skills are utilized to facilitate the role of the dental hygienist as an educator. Student experiences include application of preventive concepts in the laboratory setting and manikin and student-partner experiences. Skills: O Prerequisites: Admission to Dental Hygiene Program. DHYG 1239 GENERAL AND ORAL PATHOLOGY (2-2-0). Disturbances in human body development, diseases of the body, and disease prevention measures with emphasis on the oral cavity and associated structures. This course includes the traits, causes, and effects of diseases to include immunological factors. Emphasis is placed on the assessment of normal and abnormal conditions. DHYG 1260 CLINIC I-DENTAL HYGIENIST (2-0-12). A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. This course is the first in a series of three successive clinical courses that utilize the process of care model of assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Critical thinking skills, time management, and self assessment are emphasized for the practical application of dental hygiene theory. In this competency-based clinical course students provide comprehensive dental hygiene care for patients with routine needs with an emphasis on re-care cases. DHYG 1301 OROFACIAL ANATOMY, HISTOLOGY AND EMBRYOLOGY (3-2-4). The histology and embryology of oral tissues, gross anatomy of the head and neck, tooth morphology, and individual tooth identification. Emphasis will be placed on clinical considerations of orofacial development and anatomy relevant to dental hygiene assessment and provision of care. DHYG 1304 DENTAL RADIOLOGY (3-2-4). A study of radiation physics, hygiene, and safety theories. Emphasis on the fundamentals of oral radiographic techniques and interpretation of radiographs. Includes exposure of intra-oral radiographs, quality assurance, radiographic interpretation, patient selection criteria, and other ancillary radiographic techniques. DHYG 1311 PERIODONTOLOGY (3-3-0). Normal and diseased periodontium including the structural, functional, and environmental factors. Emphasis on etiology, pathology, treatment modalities, and therapeutic and preventive periodontics. DHYG 1315 COMMUNITY DENTISTRY (3-2-4). The principles and concepts of community public health and dental health education emphasizing community assessment, educational planning, implementation, and evaluation including methods and materials used in teaching dental health education in various community settings. This course includes an overview of basic research principles to facilitate the reading and reviewing of professional, scientific and trade literature in order to counsel clients and groups accordingly. Field experiences are designed to prepare students to function in a variety of community health settings. Emphasis is on special populations of elementary school children, geriatric, institutionalized and mentally and/or physically disabled individuals. Participation in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluation of a community dental health project is required. Field experiences are at off campus locations. DHYG 1319 DENTAL MATERIALS (3-2-4). Physical and chemical properties of dental materials including the application and manipulation of the various materials used in dentistry. Student experiences include manipulation of dental materials in the laboratory setting and manikin and student-partner experiences. DHYG 1331 PRECLINICAL DENTAL HYGIENE (3-1-7). Foundational knowledge for performing clinical skills on patients with emphasis on procedures and rationale for performing dental hygiene care. Preclinical Dental Hygiene is an introduction to instrumentation techniques and basic dental hygiene clinical procedures necessary to engage in patient treatment. This competency-based course introduces the process of care model of assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The laboratory portion of the course includes manikin and student-partner experiences. $270 fee. Fee: $24 Insurance: $3.50Skills: O Prerequisites: Admission to the program. DHYG 2201 CONTEMPORARY DENTAL HYGIENE CARE I (2-1-2). Dental hygiene care for the medically and dentally compromised patient with emphasis on supplemental instrumentation techniques. This course introduces the elements of dental hygiene care as they relate to the assessment and treatment planning of patients with complex dental and medical histories. Emphasis is placed on the systemic disease processes and the prevention, recognition, and management of medical and dental emergencies. Pain management principles, diagnostic technologies, and advanced instrumentation techniques are introduced Skills: O Prerequisites: DHYG 1260. Admission to the program. DHYG 2231 CONTEMPORARY DENTAL HYGIENE CARE II (2-2-0). A continuation of Contemporary Dental Hygiene Care I. Dental hygiene care for the medically or dentally compromised patient including advanced instrumentation techniques. This course expands on the provision of dental hygiene care for medically or dentally compromised patients and special populations emphasizing systemic disease processes and the prevention, recognition, and management of medical emergencies. Keeping with the philosophy of the dental hygiene curriculum, research literature is used to further develop the student’s ability to prepare evidenced-based decisions and to demonstrate the need for life-long professional development. DHYG 2261 CLINICAL -- DENTAL HYGIENE/HYGIENIST II (2-0-12). A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Clinic II is the second of the three successive clinical courses. This intermediate level competency-based clinical course uses the process of care model of assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Critical thinking skills, time management, and self assessment are emphasized for the practical application of dental hygiene theory. Students provide comprehensive dental hygiene care for medically compromised and moderately complex adult patient treatment cases. $270 Clinic Leasing. DHYG 2362 CLINICAL -- DENTAL HYGIENE/HYGIENIST III (3-1-15). A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Clinic III is the bridging course from the academic clinical environment to entry to the profession. This competency-based clinical course uses the process of care model of assessment, dental hygiene diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Critical thinking skills, time management, and self assessment are emphasized for the practical application of dental hygiene theory. Patient cases include medically compromised, advanced complex treatment cases, pediatric and special needs populations. $270 Clinic Leasing.
