FIRS 1313 FIREFIGHTER CERTIFICATION III (3-2-3). One in a series of courses in basic preparation for a new firefighter. Should be taken in conjunction with Firefighter Certification I, II, IV, V, VI, and VII to satisfy the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) curriculum for Basic Structural Fire Suppression, Course #100. General principles of fire apparatus, pump operations, fire streams, and public relations as they relate to fundamental development of basic firefighter skills. Familiarization of fire apparatus including pumpers, aerials, tankers and brush trucks. Please refer to the academy website at www.austincc.edu/fireprot for application process. FIRS 1319 FIREFIGHTER CERTIFICATION IV (3-2-3). One in a series of courses in basic preparation for a new firefighter. Should be taken in conjunction with Firefighter Certification I, II, III, V, VI, and VII to satisfy the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) curriculum for Basic Structural Fire Suppression, Course #100. The study and application of equipment, tactics, and procedures used in forcible entry, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul. FIRS 1401 FIREFIGHTER CERTIFICATION I (4-3-2). One in a series of courses in basic preparation for a new firefighter. An introduction to firefighter safety and development. FIRS 1407 FIREFIGHTER CERTIFICATION II (4-3-3). One in a series of courses in basic preparation for a new firefighter. FIRT 1301 FUNDAMENTALS OF FIRE PROTECTION (3-3-0). Orientation to the fire service, career opportunities, related fields. Study of the philosophy, history and fundamentals of public and private fire protection. Topics include statistics of fire and property loss, agencies involved in public and private protection, legislative development, departmental organization, training and staffing. FIRT 1315 HAZARDOUS MATERIALS I (3-3-0). The chemical characteristics and behavior of various materials. Storage, transportation, handling hazardous emergency situations, and the most effective methods of hazard mitigation. This is a basic course designed for first responders (police, fire, medical) to hazardous materials incidents. The course materials include an introduction to Haz-Mat, identifying hazardous materials, community risk assessment, command and control of incidents, and operations at incidents. Federal, state, and local regulations that apply to hazardous material will also be studied. Recognition of shipping containers and knowledge of labels, placards, and other marking systems will be learned. FIRT 1327 BUILDING CONSTRUCTION IN FIRE SERVICE (3-3-0). Components of building construction that relate to life safety. Includes relationship of construction elements and building design impacting fire spread in structures. Exploration of building construction and design related to fire spread and suppression in various structures. Examination of potential hazards resulting from construction practices and materials. FIRT 1338 FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS (3-3-0). Design and operation of fire detection and alarm systems, heat and smoke control systems, special protection and sprinkler systems, water supply for fire protection, and portable fire extinguishers. FIRT 1349 FIRE ADMINISTRATION II (3-3-0). In-depth study of fire service management as pertaining to budgetary requirements, administration, organization of divisions within the fire service, and relationships between the fire service and outside agencies. This course is a continuation of the subject matter presented in Fire Administration I. It is designed to prepare the student for middle and upper level management challenges in the fire service. FIRT 2305 FIRE INSTRUCTOR I (3-3-0). Preparation of fire and emergency services personnel to deliver instruction from a prepared lesson plan.
