ESOL 0321 ESOL HIGH BEGINNING L1 ASL GRAMMAR FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING (3-4-0).
This course is designed for Deaf students and taught in American Sign Language. Students develop American Sign Language grammar skills in order to build their first language foundation in ASL, a fully accessible visual language. This course will focus on ASL grammatical structures, varying registers in ASL, public speaking and video publishing. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit.
Prerequisites: A grade of "C" or better in ESOL 0320 or placement in the course by the ESOL assessment. Corequisites: It is recommended, but not required, that this course be taken concurrently with ESOL 0323.

This course is designed for Deaf students and taught in American Sign Language. ESOL 0323 HIGH BEGINNING WRITING AND GRAMMAR FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING (3-4-0).
This course is designed for Deaf students and taught in American Sign Language. Course emphasizes using standard English grammar in writing paragraphs and short essays. Introduction of parts of speech. Study of simple and progressive verb tenses and modal auxiliaries. Practice in writing simple and compound sentences, using transitional expressions and punctuation. Exposure to and practice with different modes of writing. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
This course is not for college-level credit.
Prerequisites: Placement in the course by the ESOL Assessment or the Compass Test.

ESOL 0324 LOW INTERMEDIATE WRITING AND GRAMMAR FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING (3-4-0).
This course is designed for Deaf Students and taught in American Sign Language. Course emphasizes using standard English grammar in writing short essays. Study of perfect tenses, passive voice, gerunds and infinitives. Introduction to clauses. Continued emphasis on writing compound sentences and introduction to complex sentence structures with appropriate conjunctions, transitional expressions, and punctuation. Continued practice in paragraph development and longer academic compositions. Exposure to and practice with different modes of writing. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.

ESOL 0325 HIGH INTERMEDIATE WRITING AND GRAMMAR FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING (3-4-0).
This course is designed for Deaf Students and taught in American Sign Language. Grammar topics include study of the perfect tenses, passive voice, modal auxiliaries, gerunds, and infinitives. Emphasis on adjective, noun, and adverb clauses showing relationships. Introduction to conditionals. Further practice in formal essay writing with continued exposure to different modes of writing. Focus on error correction, paraphrasing, and editing. Introduction to using the library to locate and college resource materials. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.

This course is designed for Deaf Students and taught in American Sign Language. Designed for advanced ESL students. This exit-level course prepares students for English 1301, other college writing and writing in the workplace. Continued study of clauses and introduction of reduced forms. Practice in writing more sophisticated formal essays and selected modes of writing, including the persuasive mode. Instruction on introduction to the research paper. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.

Emphasis is on comprehension skills such as identifying the main idea and supporting details as well as developing the ability to analyze inferences and figurative language through active translation between the languages. Designed for advanced ESOL students. This exit-level course prepares students for participation in discussions and presentation of oral reports in the college classroom and the workplace. Emphasizes listening to formal American English. Continued practice in academic listening and note-taking skills. Exposure to real-life formal talks and college lectures. Class activities include explaining and defending one's opinion in group discussions and giving formal presentations in class. Further work on pronunciation problems and development of vocal variety including intonation, emphasis, and pitch. Repeatable for up to six-credit hours.

ESOL 0351 ACCENT REDUCTION FOR ADVANCED SPEAKERS OF ENGLISH (3-4-0).
This course practices the ways in which spoken English differs from written with emphasis on the strategies English speakers use to make their message very clear for listeners. Time is spent learning how difficult English sounds are produced, and how native speakers produce the characteristic rhythm and intonation patterns of the language. Repeatable to 6 hours credit.

This course is designed to help ESOL students acquire essential skills needed for college or in the workplace. ESOL 0392 BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS (3-4-0).
Business Communications for Non-Native Speakers is a communications course for non-native speakers of English. The course occurs in a simulated office setting in which students become fellow employees of a small business specializing in consulting. Using a "hands-on" approach, students work through various business procedures, such as conducting meetings and taking minutes, creating press releases, writing white papers, and showcasing new products. This course presents business grammar and vocabulary to non-native speakers and requires students to apply this knowledge to reading, writing, and speaking the language of business English. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.

Prerequisites: ESOL Assessment at the level of high intermediate or above in writing/grammar and reading/vocabulary or a grade of "C" or higher in ESOL 0382, ESOL 0383, ESOL 0384, ESOL 0362, ESOL 0363, or ESOL 0364 or permission of the ESOL department.

ESOL 0393 INTENSIVE GRAMMAR FOR SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (3-4-0).
An accelerated grammar course tailored to correct the individual grammatical errors of ESOL students. The class will consist of diagnostics, whole group discussion of problematic grammatical and syntactical structures, and an individualized plan of instruction and study for each student based on his/her individual needs. Repeatable for up to six credit hours.
