MLAB 1101 INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (1-1-0). An introduction to clinical laboratory science, including quality control, laboratory math, safety, basic laboratory equipment, laboratory settings, accreditation, certification, professionalism, and ethics. MLAB 1201 INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANTS (2-1-4). An introduction to clinical laboratory science, including quality control, laboratory math, safety, basic laboratory equipment, laboratory settings, accreditation and certification. Students successfully completing MLAB 1167, Clinical Laboratory Assistant Practicum, in conjunction with or within 1 year of completion of MLT 1201 will receive a certificate of completion as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. Introduction to the theory and practical application of routine and special hematology procedures, both manual and automated; red blood cells and white blood cells maturation sequences, and normal and abnormal morphology and associated diseases. MLAB 2360 CLINICAL - CLINICAL/MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN I (3-0-16). A method of instruction providing detailed education, training, work-based experience, and direct patient/client care generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. In a simulated clinical setting, students process clinical specimens and function in the role of medical laboratory technicians in preparation for subsequent clinical rotations. MLAB 2361 CLINICAL - CLINICAL/MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II (3-0-16). A method of instruction providing detailed education, training, work-based experience, and direct patient/client care generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Students are assigned to a hospital or clinical laboratory and rotate through assigned departments to meet established clinical objectives. MLAB 2362 CLINICAL - CLINICAL/MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN III (3-0-16). A method of instruction providing detailed education, training, work-based experience, and direct patient/client care generally at a clinical site. Specific detailed learning objectives are developed for each course by the faculty. On-site clinical instruction, supervision, evaluation, and placement is the responsibility of the college faculty. Course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Students are assigned to a hospital or clinical laboratory and rotate through assigned departments to meet established clinical objectives. This course is a continuation of MLAB 2361. MLAB 2363 CLINICAL-CLINICAL/MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN: MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS CLINICAL (3-0-10). A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. MLAB 2378 FUNDAMENTALS OF MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS FOR CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCES (3-3-0). This course provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles of clinical molecular diagnostics and explores the use of molecular techniques in the diagnosis of disease. Topics to be covered include: nucleic acid structure and function, genetics, DNA chemistry, introduction to nucleic acid isolation, identification and amplification techniques used in infectious disease diagnosis in the clinical laboratory, components of a molecular laboratory, and evaluation of controls to validate results obtained. MLAB 2401 CLINICAL CHEMISTRY (4-3-4). An introduction to the principles and procedures of various tests performed in Clinical Chemistry. Presents the physiological basis for the test, the principle and procedure for the test, and the clinical significance of the test results, including quality control and normal values. Also includes basic chemical laboratory technique, chemical laboratory safety, electrolytes and acid-base balance, proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, enzymes, metabolites, endocrine function, and toxicology. MLAB 2431 IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY (4-3-4). A study of blood antigens and antibodies. Performance of routine blood banking procedures, including blood group and Rh typing, antibody screens, antibody identification, cross matching, elution, and absorption techniques. MLAB 2479 MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTICS TECHNIQUES (4-3-4). An introduction to the theory and laboratory techniques in molecular biology with an emphasis on molecular diagnostics, including DNA replication, transcription, gene expression and regulation, recombinant DNA and RNA techniques. PLAB 1166 PRACTICUM (OR FIELD EXPERIENCE) - PHLEBOTOMY/PHLEBOTOMIST (1-0-7). An intermediate or advanced type of health professions work-based instruction that helps students gain practical experience in the discipline, enhance skills, and integrate knowledge. The emphasis is on practical work experience for which the student has already acquired the necessary theoretical knowledge and basic skills. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional, generally a clinical preceptor. A health practicum may be a paid or unpaid learning experience. PLAB 1323 PHLEBOTOMY (3-2-4). Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions. Includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children, and infants. Emphasis on infection prevention, proper patient identification, labeling of specimens and quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, and accessioning.
