Austin Community College's Occupational Therapy Assistant Program prepares students to work collaboratively with and under the supervision of licensed occupational therapists. Courses provide students with clinical information and practical field experiences necessary to promote, restore or adapt functional performance in daily activities to individuals of all ages experiencing disease, disability or developmental delay. Physical, emotional, social and developmental disabilities are presented in depth enabling students to treat a wide range of conditions. In cooperation with both academic instructors at ACC and clinical instructors in local health care settings, students apply occupational therapy principles, treatment interventions and patient skills necessary to observe, plan and carry out treatment orders, document progress and prepare therapeutic equipment and supplies necessary for professional practice. Common settings include hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, public health agencies, public schools, early intervention programs, mental health facilities nursing homes and private practice.
Students should expect to spend two (2) years, including summers, for a total of six (6) semesters to complete the required coursework for the program.
