Digital Publishing and Graphics Technology

The Printing and Desktop Publishing Department provides entry-level skills in the job titles of desktop publisher, darkroom technician, negative stripper, plate maker, offset press operator, and binder. Intermediate and advanced courses in these topics allow for greater skill and knowledge development for both students and currently employed members of the printing industry. In addition, courses covering equipment repair, cost estimating, and on-the-job training are offered to more fully prepare students for entry or advancement in the printing trade.

DESKTOP PUBLISHING
Certificate

Electronic creation of documents, from simple newsletters and invoices to complex multi-color brochures, has become a common practice throughout the business world to support daily operations. Combined with the prepress skills for volume production, desktop publishing abilities are in high demand.

PRINTING PREPRESS
Certificate

Prepress operations involve the transfer of the image created by the typesetter or graphic artist, typically using desktop publishing methods, to a film material. Then the various images and pages are arranged into printing position and finally the printing plate is produced. Those with prepress printing production and computer skills are in high demand.

PRINTING MANAGEMENT
Associate of Applied Science Degree

Whether a printing shop is in private enterprise or is a service function within a larger organization, the management of the personnel, production, inventory, invoicing, purchasing, costing, and other on-going functions is the key element of success. The printing industry is unique in that each job is a custom order requiring close customer contact, accurate bidding, and innovative production scheduling to meet the customer's needs on time. The following course selections will prepare the student for printing sales, management, or production control.
