MATHEMATICS
Associate of Science

The Associate of Science degree in mathematics provides students with the general education and mathematics courses normally taken in the first two years of a mathematics program at a fouryear college or university and provides the flexibility for students desiring only an associate degree to specialize the program to individual interests.

1 Either HIST 2380 or HIS 2381 may be substituted for HIST 1301. Either HIS 1643 or HIST 1663 may be substituted for HIST 1302.
2 Students should consult with a fulltime mathematics instructor to determine if it is necessary to take one or more mathematics courses (like MATD 0390 or MATH 1314, MATH 1316, or MATH 2412) before taking calculus.
3 These courses must have one of the following prefixes: BIOL, CHEM, GEOL, PHYS, or PSC. The science courses should include at least two in one discipline. At least 8 hours of science must be included, which may be two or three courses, depending on the discipline. Students planning to major in mathematics at a fouryear college or university should take 8 hours of engineering physics.
4 Please select from the Humanities section of the Core Curriculum Course list.
5 We recommend that students choose electives to complete the Core Curriculum requirements. These include one additional Humanities course, one Visual Performing Arts course and one Social and Behavioral Science course. Also, most four-year degree plans in mathematics require some foreign language courses which students are encouraged to take in the first two years.
6 Restricted electives must be chosen from among the following courses: MATH 1342, MATH 2318, MATH 2420, MTH 2254, PHYS 2425 or PHYS 2426, or COSC 1315 or another specialized programming language.
7 Students may select from SPCH 1311, SPCH 1315, SPCH 1318 or meet the requirements in other ways approved by Academic Council. If it is met in some way besides taking a course, then a general elective is substituted for the speech elective.
