OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT
Associate of Applied Science Degree

Occupational Therapy helps patients of all ages with physical, emotional, social, and developmental disabilities. Activities used in treatment include, but are not limited to, creative arts such as painting; manual arts such as sewing or leather work; and daily living skills such as combing hair, brushing teeth, and dressing. Occupational therapy assistants and the registered occupational therapist work as a team to plan and carry out programs, observe patients, make progress reports, and order and prepare equipment. Opportunities for rewarding employment are found in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, public health agencies, special schools, mental health facilities, private practice settings, and nursing homes. This course of study has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE, AOTA P.O. Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220; area code 301- 652-2682). State licensure is presently required in Texas for occupational therapy assistants by the Texas Board of Occupational Therapy Examiners (TBOTE, 333 Guadalupe Suite 2-510, Austin TX 78701-3942; area code 512-305-6951). Applicants for licensure must provide necessary information regarding drug, alcohol, or conviction history for determination of licensure eligibility. Graduates are eligible for national certification as an occupational therapy assistant (COTA), by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy, Inc. (NBCOT, 800 S. Frederick Ave. Suite 200, Gaithersburg, MD 20877-4150; area code 301-990-7979) following completion of their certification examination for Occupational Therapy Assistants.
