The focus is on the structures and relationships that are important in operative procedures. It is assumed that the student is familiar with basic human anatomy and physiology. Areas covered in this course are the skull and human brain, the face, eye and ear region, the neck and throat, the axilla and breast, the shoulder, upper limb and hand, superficial/deep muscles of the back, the vertebral column, and spinal cord. Anatomy will be related to surgical conditions and procedures as appropriate. Prerequisites: Anatomy & Physiology I and II (8 hours). (SFA )

SFA 2023 ADVANCED SURGICAL ANATOMY II (3-3-0). This course places an emphasis on regional anatomy as related to surgical procedures. It is assumed that the student is familiar with basic human anatomy and physiology, and the focus is clearly on the structures and relationships that are important in operative procedures. Areas covered in this course are the thorax, abdominal cavity and retroperitoneum, pelvis and perineum, inguinal and femoral regions, and the lower limb. Anatomy will be related to surgical conditions and procedures as appropriate. Prerequisites: Advanced Surgical Anatomy I. (SFA )

SFA 2035 CLINICAL PRECEPTORSHIP (5-0-16). Clinical practice of basic surgical skills for Surgical First Assistants by individual assignment to a qualified preceptor surgeon who will provide direct supervision and guidance. The student must complete a total of 100 to 125 surgical cases. The "100 to 125" cases must consist of cases in the following areas: general surgery, orthopedic surgery, peripheral vascular surgery, endoscopic, and two specific specialty areas (i.e., neurosurgery, oral, urology). (SFA )

SFA 2113 FUNDAMENTALS OF SURGICAL TECHNIQUES I (3-3-0). This course will provide a knowledge and skill based review of the foundational techniques of patient care in the operating room. The course assumes that the student is familiar with foundational practices as a CST in the operating room. The practices are reviewed and expanded on the basis of the role of the surgical first assistant. One of the tasks to be studied and practiced is the ability to direct and educate others in the proper and safe way to perform these tasks. The following areas are covered in the course: monitoring devices, bladder catheterization, positioning, tourniquet usage, skin preparation, drapes and draping, instrumentation, special equipment, and transportation of the critically ill patient. (SFA )

SFA 2123 FUNDAMENTALS OF SURGICAL TECHNIQUES II (3-3-0). This course will focus on the knowledge and skills of intraoperative patient care. The course assumes the students is familiar with the foundational practices as a CST. The practices taught in this course form the basis of the role of the surgical first assistant and may be new to the student. The following areas are covered in this course: visualization techniques, hemostasis, suturing techniques, drainage systems, wound dressing, endoscopic surgical skills and safety techniques, and postoperative pain control technique. Prerequisites: Fundamentals of Surgical Techniques I. (SFA )

SFA 2213 SURGICAL PATHOLOGY (3-3-0). This course will focus on the knowledge of the nature of cause of the disease processes that are encountered in the surgical setting. The course assumes that the student is familiar with basic anatomy and physiology. The following areas are covered in the course: a brief review of human embryology and tissue types, the nature of disease, various types of diseases, the causes of disease entities, and the surgical approaches to cure. Prerequisites: Anatomy and Physiology I and II (8 hours) and Introduction to Microbiology (3 hours). (SFA )

SFA 2223 SURGICAL BIOSCIENCE (3-3-0). This course will focus on the knowledge of bioscience require to practice as a surgical first assistant. The course assumes the student is familiar with basic anatomy and physiology. The following areas are covered in the course: cells and tissues, understanding diagnostic studies, fluid and electrolyte physiology, acid-base physiology, the critically ill patient, thermo-regulatory needs and devices, and care of the surgical specimen. (SFA )

SFA 2312 ANESTHESIA AND SURGICAL PHARMACOLOGY (2-2-0). This course will focus on the knowledge of basic anesthesia processes and procedures and surgical pharmacology required to practice more safely as a surgical first assistant. The course assumes that the student is familiar with basic anatomy and physiology. The following areas are covered in this course: general drugs and agents common to the surgical patient and anesthesia drugs and agents. Both will focus on features that support patient safety. (SFA )

SFA 2321 PROFESSIONAL ASPECTS (1-1-0). This course will focus on aspects of the role of the surgical first assistant. The following areas are covered in the course: role definition and practice, professional development, ethical and legal concerns, and relationship to the patient. (SFA )
