Office Systems Technology


OST 1001 COMPUTER KEYBOARDING (1-0-3). Mastery of the keyboard by touch, a skill which can be used on typewriters, CRTs, computer terminals, or other equipment with a keyboard. Not recommended for OST majors. May be repeated with Instructor approval. Fee: $8

OST 1012 MEDICAL BILLING MANAGEMENT (2-2-1). Designed for the detail-oriented individual with a working knowledge of medical terminology and extensive computer skills. The course will include coding, insurance claim preparation, appeals process, managed care, accounts receivable management, and debt collections. Skills: R Prerequisites: AHS 1303, OST 1013, or equivalent, or Instructor approval.

OST 1013 KEYBOARDING/MS® WORD I (3-2-3). Mastery of the keyboard and the application of typewriting skills in the production of manuscripts, business letters, and tabulation problems. Fee: $8 Skills: R

OST 1014 MEDICAL OFFICE MANAGEMENT (4-3-2). Designed for the individual interested in managing a health care professional's office. This course will include record keeping in the physician's office, appointment scheduling, medical records release, personnel management, common labor laws and regulations, and preparation of payroll tax reports for the small health care professional's office. Skills: R Prerequisites: AHS 1303, OST 1013, or equivalent, or Instructor approval.

OST 1023 EXCEL® (3-2-2). This course is designed to provide students preparing for careers as Administrative Assistants with a basic knowledge of Windows® and Excel®. Students will be able to use Excel® to produce spreadsheets for business applications. Skills: R Prerequisites: Key 25 wpm

OST 1033 BUSINESS WRITING SKILLS (3-3-0). A review of the mechanics of writing, including grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Exercises reinforce the knowledge and use of these rules. Skills: R

OST 1043 BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS (3-3-0). Develops business letter-writing abilities for people in secretarial, marketing, accounting, managerial, and all other types of business careers. Provides study and application of the specialized principles and techniques used in writing effective business correspondence. Also includes review of writing skills and mechanics of style. Fee: $8 Prerequisites: OST 1013, OST 1033 (ENG 1613 for non-OST majors) and ability to key 30 words per minute, or Instructor approval.

OST 1063 DATA ENTRY APPLICATIONS (3-3-1). The course will teach students to operate the ten-key pad and enter alphanumeric data on the computer. Students will acquire skills for a data entry operator position by entering data on business records and prepared spreadsheets. Sample employment tests will be administered. Basic business math skills will be reviewed. Fee: $8 Skills: R Prerequisites: OST 1013, or OST 1001 or ability to type 30 wpm.

OST 1073 SPEEDWRITING (3-3-0). This is an introduction to speedwriting theory and development of transcription skills. Included is the development of the ability to write, read, and transcribe speedwriting notes. The course is specifically designed to equip the nonvocational student with an effective writing tool for personal use but can be developed into a vocational skill if an employment level of speed is achieved. OST 1083 OFFICE PROCEDURES (3-3-0). This course is designed to enable a student to become part of an effective office team, including human relations and communication skills, career planning and employment opportunities, issues and technology in today's office, time management, and office basics such as copying, filing, telephone techniques, use of electronic mail, facsimile machines, and voice mail. Skills: R

OST 1103 ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES (3-2-3). This course is designed to prepare the student for job responsibilities in an electronic office. Editing, document creation and storage, administrative support responsibilities, job seeking activities, and human relations are given emphasis. Specialized simulations are included. Fee: $8 Prerequisites: OST 1113 or equivalent.

OST 1113 KEYBOARDING/MS® WORD II (3-2-3). The skills and techniques acquired in Keyboarding/MS® Word I are further developed and applied to the typing of various office data and correspondence. Fee: $8 Skills: C Prerequisites: OST 1013 or equivalent and a minimum of 35 wpm.

OST 1162 MS® WORD (2-1-2). This course is designed to provide students with a basic knowledge of Windows® and Microsoft® Word to produce mailable business documents using word processing features in a network environment. Prerequisites: Key 25 wpm.

OST 2001 ADVANCED KEYBOARD SKILLBUILDING (1-0-3). Designed to build keyboarding skill to a minimum of 60 words per minute by using a diagnostic approach to identify student keyboarding difficulties. The individualized diagnosis provides for intensive practice drills for developing speed and accuracy on five-minute writings. Prerequisites: Minimum typing speed of 50 words per minute.

OST 2013 INTEGRATED APPLICATIONS (3-2-3). This course is designed to provide students with a basic knowledge of PowerPoint® and Excel® as well as create compound documents that incorporate MS® Word files and/or Excel® files, and/or PowerPoint® files. Prerequisites: Knowledge of MS® Word and 30 wpm.

OST 2043 MACHINE TRANSCRIPTION (3-3-0). A course designed to build a high level of skill in producing mailable copy from recorded material. Experience will be gained in doing transcription in a variety of business situations. Fee: $8 Prerequisites: OST 1033, OST 1113, and ability to key 50 wpm. Spring semester only.

OST 2053 OFFICE MANAGEMENT (3-3-0). This course includes instruction on business management principles, skills and competencies of effective administrative office managers, leadership and personality styles, recruitment, training, supervision, and development of effective office personnel, decision-making, human relations and communication skills. Students will solve case problems using decision-making method, give oral presentations of office management topics, research an office position and explore job search techniques on the Internet. OST 2062 ACCESS® FILES MANAGEMENT (2-1-2). This course offers instruction and application for designing, updating, and managing database using Microsoft Access®. The student will be able to produce professional business reports and review basic ARMA filing rules. Fee: $8 Skills: R Prerequisites: Ability to key 30wpm.

OST 2072 POWERPOINT® (2-1-2). This course will provide instruction and application in the use of Microsoft PowerPoint® to create high-quality visual aids for presentations. It will include applications for professional business visuals such as graphs, charts, drawings, and note pages. Fee: $8 Skills: R Prerequisites: Ability to key 30 wpm.

OST 2074 ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT INTERNSHIP (4-1-15). A coordination of office-related activities with individualized learning objectives structured to relate the student's major field of study to practical work experience. The student is required to work at an approved office work station for at least 15 hours per week and attend regularly scheduled seminar classes one hour per week. Prerequisites: Sophomore standing with a B average and a minimum of 15 semester hours in Office Administration or Instructor approval.

OST 2081 SPECIAL PROBLEMS (1-1-0). May be organized class or individual instruction. May be repeated when topics vary. Up to six hours of credit with Instructor approval. Laboratory fee if applicable. ( )
