OTA 1315 SURFACE AND FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY (5-3-6). Designed to enable students to understand anatomical structure and motion as applied to Occupational Therapy procedures. The student gains knowledge of the human musculoskeletal system with emphasis given to the biomechanics of human motion. Laboratory procedures will include basic skills of observation and will emphasize the assessment skills utilized in occupational therapy (goniometry and manual muscle testing) to determine the condition of the patient/client's musculoskeletal system. OTA 1403 PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL CONDITIONS (3-3-0). Designed to acquaint the beginning student with pathophysiology, etiology, symptomatology, management, and prognosis of the various pathological and injury-related problems treated in the occupational therapy/rehabilitative components of health care agencies. Comparisons of normal and abnormal movements, structural and functional relationships and the need for occupational therapy interventions are stressed. Particular emphasis is placed on diseases and/or injuries involving the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. Prerequisites: Instructor approval.
OTA 1405 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY II (5-3-6). Designed to acquaint the OTA student with basic therapist-client relationships, teaching techniques, and activity analysis for the application of specific therapeutic modalities. Emphasis is placed on providing the student with a general knowledge of tools, equipment, and basic techniques of: minor and major crafts used in OT (such as woodworking, ceramics, copper and leather tooling, needlework, and mosaics); fabrication of adaptive equipment/clothing and orthotics. OTA 1502 THERAPEUTIC NEUROPHYSIOLOGY (2-2-0). Designed to provide the OTA student with a more in-depth study of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology as it relates to the neurological approaches utilized in occupational therapy. Emphasis will be placed on the neurological conditions frequently treated in occupational therapy. Prerequisites: OTA 1403 and OTA 1405.
OTA 1505 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY III (5-2-9). Emphasis is given to the fundamentals of dysfunction seen in general medicine and surgery. Included will be: gerontology, stressing disabilities frequently associated with the elderly client, the occupational therapy assistants' role in maintaining independence and adjustment to problems of aging, and the role of the Occupational Therapy Assistant as Activity Director; orthopedic disabilities; hand rehabilitation; and disabilities commonly referred for treatment in an acute care setting. Students demonstrate their understanding of the sociocultural, emotional, physical, and psychological aspects of disability through an introduction to the clinical setting in a health care setting. Continued emphasis is placed on developing proficiency in the various treatment modalities. Fee: $18 Prerequisites: OTA 1405.
OTA 2102 PRE-CLINICAL TRAINING (2-1-4). Students will be introduced to the occupational therapy clinic through observation and experience within an area occupational therapy facility under the direct supervision of practicing Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant. Fee: $12 Prerequisites: OTA 1315. Corequisite: OTA 2106.
OTA 2103 PSYCHOSOCIAL DYSFUNCTION (3-3-0). Introductory course to acquaint the student with psychiatric disorders through utilization of the DSM-IV. Included will be issues in psychopathology as they impact the Occupational Therapy Assistant. Criteria for diagnosis, behavioral patterns and medications utilized in the psychiatric setting will be stressed. Prerequisites: OTA 1505.
OTA 2106 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY IV (6-4-6). A study of the theoretical basis for occupational therapy treatment techniques seen in rehabilitation settings. Included will be spinal cord injury, developmental dysfunction, cardiac rehabilitation and other neurological conditions. An understanding of normal growth and development from birth through adulthood will be provided. Activity analysis for the utilization of adaptive equipment, self-care activities, sensorimotor skills, and work simplification as applied to treatment will be stressed. OTA 2204 CLINICAL TRAINING I (4-1-12). Students will continue their experience within an occupational therapy facility under the direct supervision of a practicing Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant. Corequisite: OTA 2205. Fee: $12
OTA 2205 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY V (5-3-6). Designed to acquaint the student with the occupational therapy process utilized in the treatment of clinical conditions commonly seen in psychiatric settings. The course enables the student to identify and describe current psychiatric theories; including, contributing in assessment, goal-setting, observational reporting, therapeutic application of media, and health maintenance in the area of mental health. Instruction of individuals in selected activities and life tasks will be stressed. Laboratory experience and supervised clinical experience allow the student to demonstrate skill in instruction and adapting selected tasks to meet particular problems of clients. Basic principles of administration, management, and leadership are explained. Fee: $24 Prerequisites: OTA 2106.
OTA 2305 CLINICAL TRAINING II (5-1-16). Students will expand their clinical knowledge and experience within an occupational therapy facility under the supervision of a practicing Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant. Fee: $12 Prerequisites: OTA 2204.
