MLT 1102 PHLEBOTOMY (2-1-3). This course prepares students to draw blood from adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients for the purposes of clinical laboratory analysis. The curriculum includes: proper site preparation and collection of specimens utilizing a variety of collection techniques, proper labeling of patient samples, preparation of specimens for transport to the laboratory, proper use of Standard/Universal Precautions, promotion of good public relations with patients and hospital personnel, logging specimens into the laboratory, processing laboratory specimens, and introduction to basic laboratory testing and vital signs. Students will be presented theory and principles relating to blood collection during the didactic portion of the course and practice blood collection skills in student laboratory. Successful completion of this course (MLT 1102), along with the successful completion of, or validation of skills from MLT 1111, Phlebotomy Practicum, will result in the awarding of a Certificate of Completion and eligibility to take a national certification exam in phlebotomy. MLT 1111 PHLEBOTOMY PRACTICUM (1-0-7). In this course, students will be scheduled at one or more central Texas area clinical sites to perform a minimum of 112 hours of phlebotomy practicum. The student will perform a variety of blood collection techniques under the supervision of a clinical instructor that include proper site preparation and collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and capillary/skin puncture methods. Students must adhere to the rules and regulations of the course and clinical site and be able to obtain transportation to the clinical to meet the objectives of the course. Admission to this course is limited to students who are co-enrolled in MLT 1102 or currently admitted into the MLT Program. MLT 1201 MEDICAL LABORATORY ASSISTANT PRACTICUM (1-0-7).
The student will gain practical general training and experience in the workplace. The college and the clinical site will develop and document a plan for the student, which will include scheduling the student for 112 hours of clinical experience. The plan relates the workplace training and experiences to the student's general and technical course of study.
During the practicum assignment the student will master the theory, concepts, and skills involving the tools, materials, equipment, procedures, regulations, laws, and interactions within and among political, economic, environmental, and legal systems associated with the laboratory workplace; demonstrate ethical behavior, safety practices, interpersonal and teamwork skills, appropriate verbal and written communications in the workplace.
Upon successful completion and validation of objectives and skills from MLT 1201 and successful completion of MLT 1202, a certificate of completion will be awarded.
Prerequisites: Completion of formal structured phlebotomy program OR one year full time experience as a phlebotomist AND enrollment in MLT 1202.

MLT 1202 INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (2-1-4). An introduction to clinical laboratory science, including quality control, laboratory math, laboratory safety, care and use of basic laboratory equipment, laboratory settings, accreditation and certification. Upon successful completion of this course the student will: demonstrate laboratory safety perform laboratory math; and describe quality control. The student will demonstrate the use of basic laboratory equipment; and explain accreditation and certification. Student successfully completing MLT 1201, Medical Laboratory Assistant Practicum in conjunction with or within 1 year of completion of MLT 1202 will receive a certificate of completion as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. MLT 1302 IMMUNOLOGY/SEROLOGY (2-2-1). The science of immunology and serology are introduced through the study of theories and processes related to natural body defenses and performance of basic serological procedures. Special emphasis is placed on specimen collection and handling, routine and specific laboratory tests and disease correlation's for each. Prerequisite: Admission to Medical Laboratory Technology or MLT Program Coordinator approval. Fee: $24
MLT 1405 HEMATOLOGY (5-3-6). Theory and practice of hematology and coagulation are studied, with special emphasis on correlating laboratory test results with clinical disease states. The fundamentals of hematology include the structure, function, and kinetics of the formed elements of the blood. The student will develop skills and competencies in clinical laboratory techniques such as specimen processing, identification and enumeration of the formed elements, and use of instrumentation. Coagulation covers the mechanisms of hemostasis and thrombosis, including learning the components of the hemostatic process and principles of laboratory tests used to evaluate bleeding disorders. MLT 1502 LABORATORY MATHEMATICS (2-2-0). Mathematical functions related to clinical laboratory practice are introduced and include scientific notation, logarithms, systems of measurement, and calculations for solutions, concentrations and dilutions. Other mathematics concepts studied include absorbance and percent transmission, standard curves, hematology calculations, renal clearance tests, quality control calculations, workload recording, and proficiency testing. Prerequisites: College-level math course or MLT Program Coordinator approval.
MLT 1504 IMMUNOHEMATOLOGY (4-3-2). Immunohematology is introduced through the study of theories, principles and procedures related to: donor screening, component preparation and use, antigen-antibody reactions, ABO-Rh typing, antibody screening, compatibility testing, identification of allo-antibodies, hemolytic disease of the newborn, Rh immune globulin, autoimmune hemolytic anemias and adverse effects of transfusion. Prerequisite: MLT 1202, MLT 1302, and MLT 1405 or MLT Program Coordinator approval. Fee: $24
MLT 1602 URINALYSIS/BODY FLUIDS (2-2-1). Study of kidney structure and function and the analysis and clinical significance of urine and other body fluids. Chemical tests and microscopic examination of urine and other body fluids are performed. Fee: $24 Prerequisites: MLT 1202, MLT 1302, and MLT 1405 or MLT Program Coordinator approval.
MLT 1604 CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY (4-3-3). Through the study of clinical bacteriology, students learn potential hazards of bacteriological techniques; principles of sterilization, bacterial description and classification; culture media; collection, processing, and primary inoculation of specimens; staining techniques; identification of pathogenic microorganisms, and bacteriological quality control. MLT 1703 INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL (3-1-8). In a simulated clinical laboratory and under close supervision, students practice all basic procedures previously presented. In this simulated setting, students process actual clinical specimens and function in the role of medical laboratory technicians in preparation for Clinical I and II. Students also perform Phlebotomy skills for 52 hours in an actual hospital or clinic laboratory. Fee: $24 Prerequisites: MLT 1502, MLT 1602, and MLT 1504, or MLT Program Coordinator approval.
MLT 2404 CLINICAL CHEMISTRY (4-3-4). Clinical chemistry is introduced, with emphasis on quality control, instrumentation, and performance of all routine chemical analytical procedures. Emphasis is placed on reagent preparations, analytical methodologies and correlating laboratory results with clinical significance. MLT 2503 CLINICAL PRACTICUM I (3-0-16). Students are assigned to a hospital or clinical laboratory for 16 hours per week and rotate through assigned departments to meet established clinical objectives by performing laboratory testing on patient specimens. Clinical experiences are correlated with theory through discussions with clinical instructors, study questions, exams, and assigned projects. MLT 2603 PARASITOLOGY/MYCOLOGY (3-2-2). Designed to acquaint the student with the subjects of medical mycology and clinical parasitology. General classification and characteristics of pathogenic fungi are presented and emphasis is placed in the laboratory on initial inoculation and preservation of specimens. Parasite/host relationships and their effects, descriptions of life cycles of parasites, preservation of specimens, and microscopic examination and identification are stressed.
