Fashion Merchandising


FSHD 1302 INTRODUCTION TO FASHION (3-3-0). Survey of the world of fashion businesses. Introductions to the creation and merchandising of fashion through the study of fashion vocabulary, the fashion processes, fashion publications, and career opportunities. The student will demonstrate knowledge of fashion vocabulary; document the fashion process through contact with fashion businesses and publications; record job opportunities in the fashion industry; and write an interview with a fashion profession. FSHD 1308 FASHION TRENDS (3-3-0). A study of the effects of eastern and western cultures on the development of fashion. Examination of the relationship of social, psychological, economic, demographic, and lifestyle trends to fashion trends. The student will create a computer generated graph illustrating the performance of a fashion company or a fashion product; evaluate consumer clothing choices; and research the influences and document the movement of a current fashion trend. FSHN 1301 TEXTILES (3-3-0). A general study of textiles with emphasis of factors that affect the hand, appearance, and performance in clothing use. Examination of the properties of natural and man-made fibers, how yarn is formed, methods of production, and the properties of a variety of fabrics. Application of textiles used in the apparel industry. The student will identify the fibers, yarns, construction, dyeing, printing, and finishing techniques used in contemporary textiles and how these affect the hand, appearance, performance, and end use of clothing textile products; write an evaluation of a selection of fabric swatches; and recommend textile applications for the design, manufacturing, marketing, and care of fashion. FSHN 1342 VISUAL MERCHANDISING (3-3-0). Skill development in the creation of showroom or retail store window/interior displays that sell merchandise. Study of the basic techniques of store planning, mannequin dressing, alternate form design, and display space conceptualization and implementation. The student will evaluate areas of visual merchandising and the display work environment; analyze retail fashion displays based on the elements and principles of design; demonstrate basic display techniques with foamcore, Styrofoam, mannequins, props, lighting, and computer generated signs; and develop display theme, budget, and resource information. FSHN 1366 PRACTICUM - FASHION MERCHANDISING (3-0-20). Practical general training and experiences in the workplace. The college with the employer develops and documents an individualized plan for the student. The plan relates the workplace training and experiences to the student's general and technical course of study. The guided external experiences may be paid or unpaid. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Skills: R Prerequisites: FSHD 1302 (FAS 1023)

FSHN 2301 FASHION PROMOTION (3-3-0). A survey of fashion direction, publicity, and fashion even coordination. Emphasis on fashion show production from idea to runway including theme development, stage/set design, choreography, music coordination, lighting, line-up, model fittings, rehearsal, and press kit development. The student will write and distribute a fashion show news release; create and develop a fashion show theme; illustrate sets and staging in a scale drawing; and document descriptions of all fashion show job responsibilities. FSHN 2303 FASHION BUYING (3-3-0). Fundamentals of fashion buying with instruction in planning, pricing, and purchasing retail fashion inventories. Identification of wholesale merchandise and media resources. The student will document fashion merchandising resources, brands versus private labels; analyze the role of fashion media in predicting consumer buying trends; interpret retailing formats and trends in retail growth and expansion; communicate the activities involved in preparing for and making fashion market buying trips; display teamwork in solving merchandising problems; and plan retail pricing, sales and inventory, and terms of purchasing. FSHN 2309 FASHION IMAGE (3-3-0). Instruction in the techniques used to analyze the fashion image of individual clients. Emphasis on personal coloring, seasonal color harmonies, appropriate fabric textures, body proportion and silhouette, figure, facial and hair analysis, and wardrobe coordination. Study of fashion image consultant business practices and job qualifications. The student will demonstrate observation skills in personal fashion image analysis; document and present an in-depth personal image evaluation; and relate the business practices and job qualifications of a fashion image consultant. FSHN 2388 INTERNSHIP FASHION MERCHANDISING (3-1-15). An experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the educational institution and a business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to a specific occupational outcome. This may be a paid or unpaid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Skills: R Prerequisites: 6 hours of Fashion Merchandising or other Business Courses. (FAS 2013)

FSHN 2389 INTERNSHIP - FASHION MERCHANDISING (3-1-15). An experience external to the college for an advanced student in a specialized field involving a written agreement between the educational institution and a business or industry. Mentored and supervised by a workplace employee, the student achieves objectives that are developed and documented by the college and that are directly related to specific occupational outcomes. This may be a paid or unpaid experience. This course may be repeated if topics and learning outcomes vary. Skills: R Prerequisites: 9 hours of Fashion Merchandising or other Business Courses.
